On the Hudson Line, Shoreliner car #6152 (Poughkeepsie) came fron the factory as a standard coach. It was converted to a bar car by ripping out several rows of seats and Bolting in a platform bar to the floor and a few luggage racks for standing room. There were many a good times had back in those days. I met a few life long friends there. One time they had a retirement party for a regular and hired a stripper for the occasion (with a nice contribution to the conductor to look the other way). The beginning of the end for the Hudson Line bar car was the smoking ban in the late 80s. Back then, who ever heard of a bar that you couldn't smoke in? MN commissary even sold cigarettes (Marlboro red pack and Newports IIRC) Initially it was ignored until they planted plainclothes MN police which started to hand out $50 tickets. Caught employees were brought up on charges with discipline of 10 day record suspensions. So little by little they blanked the bartenders job until the job was abolished outright. Then they ripped out the floor bolted bar and reinstalled seats where the bar was. Last time I rode in #6152 if you look closely on the river side of the car, you can see the patched up holes in the middle of the coach above the window where the NYS liquor license was bolted in. All good things really do come to an end:( |
