Tuscarora Almanac for May 10

1919 – from The Book of First Runs

The Contract IV Culver Line elevated structure is extended from Kings Highway to Avenue X.

1924 – from The Book of First Runs

BMT No. 7 Franklin-Nassau trains begin service. They will operate on weekends during the summer between Franklin Avenue Terminal in Brooklyn and Chambers Street Station in Manhattan. Trains will operated via the express tracks of the Brighton, Sea Beach and Fourth Avenue lines and the tracks on the south side of the Manhattan Bridge.

1975 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last full day of service on the BMT Culver Shuttle. The final eastbound train left from the lower level of 9th Avenue Station at 11:54 PM and arrived at Ditmas Avenue at 12 Midnight. The last westbound train left 12:06 AM on May 11, 1975 and arrived back at 9th Avenue six minutes later. The consist was (w) 8525-24, 8059-58.

The R-27/30’s which had been assigned here; 8032-3, 8046-7, 8058-9, 8146-7, 8256-7 and 8524-5 had been modified to operate only in “series”. They will now be re-modified back to normal operation. They also were the last cars to carry BMT-Type third rail shoes as the Culver Shuttle was the last line to use third rail in the elevated position.

Personal Note: I rode the Culver Line on May 10 during the daytime. As a shuttle the line had a charm all its own. There was no denying that the platforms at Fort Hamilton Parkway and 13th Avenue were in bad shape. Nevertheless I was sad to see it go.

1974 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of trackless trolley service in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The last time I rode the Culver Shuttle was in October, 1974. By that time the stations were in a state of dangerous disrepair. Platform lights out for days at a time. Crumbling wooden platforms. I'm surprised the Shuttle lasted into 1975.

There was some kind of rail service along what was the Shuttle route on/above 37 Street from 1875 to 1975. The PPCI surface steam in 1875 to BRT surface electric to BMT elevated in 1975. That's 100 years, and the only 50 since the shuttle was shut down.

I remember the Culver shuttle well. Whenever my father brought me to Red's to eat, on 13th Avenue, I always wanted to sit by the window to watch the trains go by on the elevated. Then, in high school until the structure was razed, I would watch the men play bocci.

The last few times that I rode the shuttle the other ends of the platforms at Ft Hamilton Parkway and 13 Avenue were closed off.

I remember they were finally tearing it down in 1983 when I would pass by there on the B35.

I still say that is one I would rebuild as close to the Right of Way as possible on mostly two levels of single track that would allow for a Broadway/4th Avenue service to run via Culver (to Manhattan on the upper level, from Manhattan on the lower level with as possible both ways on the same level at stops that closely resemble the old line. The Manhattan direction for any Culver line trains would stop on a new upper level of Ditmas Avenue northbound (before crossing over the other tracks on essentially a bridge) while trains to Coney Island would stop in the same area the old shuttle trains terminated at before merging south of Ditmas going to. This could be a way to have the (W) operate at all times from Coney Island to Astoria.

I broke in as a M/M and later operated on my own on the Culver Shuttle on both R-27/30s and R-16s and both types operated normally with no indication whatsoever that they were limited to series speed. I can’t see any reason why there would have been any sort of restriction on the Culver at all since it was built to the same dual contract standards as the rest of the Culver and other lines like the West End and Bway Bkln els where R-27/30s operated regularly.

There’s a better chance of Donald Trump having an affair with AOC than this ever happening.
