I doubt that its the Astoria line, simply because the middle track in the pic is signaled. There were no signals on the middle track of the Astoria line until the 1990s AFAIK.

I believe you're right. I don't know if this train is dead heading to Coney Island yard or in service rerouted to Cone Island

This is a three-car train, but is not in service. The chain link gates are not seen placed in front of the storm door. Most likely going back to Coney Island Yard.

In other words you are saying that the express track was an absolute block which extended from its beginning at Queensboro Plaza to north of Astoria Blvd. At both places the express track merges with both local tracks.

Prior to the new signaling, the Astoria middle tk was absolute block between N/O beebe Ave and S/O Astoria Blvd and there were fixed signals at those locations indicating “End of signal control.” If yo look carefully at the homeball on the middle tk in the photo yo will see that it os designated with tk number D4 which is the middle tk number for the West End line. BMT/IND middle tks are designated as tk 3/4 and the signal number plates in the S/B direction on in this case the West End Line read D3 and the number plates in the N/B direction read D4.

R1/9 cars were sent over to the east because of the upcoming revision to the Chrystie st rotes, and the surplus cars left over by the introduction of the R40slant cars.

The JJ was the part time route that operated during rush hours, evenings and weekends, when the QJ didn't run. It basically covered the Jamaica line longer than the QJ did in most cases.

The line was rerouted uptown, and renamed KK,while the QJ began operating 24/7 between Jamaica and Broad st,7am to 730 to the extended terminal at Stillwell Ave.

All of this went away a few years later,as the QJ was removed from the Brighton line, replaced by M services (returned back as the Brighton local, not express like before Chrystie st reroutes)rerouted.

Jamaica services were relabeled, introducing the J(which was what the line was originally supposed to be called,R27/30 cars already had them on rollsigns.)
KK was cut back to Eastern Pky,relabled K.
No more QJ/KK skip stop above ENY.

Believe it or not, the line operated more services during the day, with K service starting at 6am to 10 am,230pm to 630 pm.

The J ran A/B skip stop services during am rush hours towards Manhattan, express after ENY to Myrtle, then express to Essex st.

This service pattern should return.
Right now, the Z is useless.

Quick one: before the new signalling of the Pelham line in the mid 90's the middle track between Parkhester and Hunts Pt had a limited number of signals as well. Northbound you went from a timer signal at Elder Av all the way to entering Parkchester.

When did they start using R-44s on the Aqueduct specials? I worked Aqueduct station as a T/D a couple of times after the 44s arrived and I don’t recall seeing any in that service.

I see only four cars instead of eight. Or are they sending four cars to Rock Park yard ?
It was reported here that R-10s were once used on the JFK Exp so you never know. I'll ask around.

Either that or the date is wrong and the photo is from a later time when the R-44s were being used on the JFK (Train to the Plane) Express.

The date is correct as stamped on the 35mm slide. When the R-44s were used on the JFK Exp, the fiberglass bonnets were painted silver with blue strip with no black paint around the front windows. The r-44s in the image has the black paint and some graffiti.

I came across this image with the title "Cypress Hills". Can't be, because Cypress Hills on the Jamaica line doesn't have a center track.
Now I'm thinking is this on the West End ? Or maybe the Astoria Line ?
What line and station do you think this is on ? Note uncovered third rail.

The middle track on this line barely saves you any time now.
timers placed along the road slow the trains down to 10mph..
Sad.

Perhaps age caught up to the line?
