CCTV cameras in subway cars

Posted by rbseabeach on Thu Jun 23 11:12:47 2022

I just read that they are testing 100 CCTV Cameras ever since the 4/22 incident @ 36th Street station on the N,D & R train in Sunset PArk. I can recall reading many years ago that the 160's were "equipped" with the ability to install CCTV cameras and they tried it out on a few cars in the past.
Are the 160's epuipped for CCTV cameras?
If the program is now successful, would it be possible to retrofit the older cars?
I also read that they did this in chicago with federal funds.
Was that program successful in Chicago?
Did it make a difference?
Thank you!!

Thank you!
I've also asked this question to various conductors, and Never received a solid answer.
From what I've been told, cctv was recessed into the ceilings well hidden,IF they were installed.

oh ok.
Although I could understand why some people would be uncomfortable with big brother... I always felt that if people knew there were cctv cameras, they would possibly think twice about committing a crime since they would have no idea if the NYPD would be waiting for them at the next station. This is why I would think it is effective.
I would love to see statistics to see if it helpped in Chicago.

I agree with that but I do see a problem, CCTV would probably require either a radio transmission or Wifi.

Radio transmission might be ineffective if there are too many transmissions at the same time. At present the free public Wifi in the NYC subway exists only in underground stations. The tunnels are not wired for wifi or cell phones. Wifi in outdoor stations exists only if the users cell phone or device has mobile data.

I believe, at present, the best that can be done with cameras in subway cars is to record the action for later retrieval in the event of an incident.

Ride MNRR on the new stuff's you can see the SID for the cameras, it has the car number.

Subway why can't the cars upload when they are in a station? These cameras are not high def in any means.

Why would you ask a conductor? Do you think train crews are privy to equipment that the MTA & police want kept under wraps.

I took my shot.A question worth asking.

The most I got out of it was.."I don't know",to an outright "No!".
Not a problem for me.

It is what it is.

On board CCTV images would be held on board until there's a need to examine any video. Petty much the same way it's done at fixed station locations, except NVR recording equipment located at a train station can be accessed remotely via an IP connection for review, and or download of video.

As for train borne CCTV, no upload from moving trains at this time. The tunnel, and above ground, radio transmission system are limited to narrow band VHF, and 25KHz UHF voice channel frequencies.

No Buck Rogers communication technology gadgets yet.

Who would be watching the camera feeds? Or is it just that the footage is recorded, and looked at only if some incident occurs? Otherwise erased after some period of time (I wonder how long)?

I watched on TV last night about Camera's on subway cars.
They Are there,on selected trains.
The MTA didn't mention where or which cars.
