Tuscarora Almanac - May 10 - 11 , 1975 - The Book of Last Runs

Brooklyn, New York
New York City Transit Authority
BMT Division

This is the last full day of service on the BMT Culver Shuttle. The final eastbound train left from the lower level of 9th Avenue Station at 11:54 PM and arrived at Ditmas Avenue at 12 Midnight. The last westbound train left 12:06 AM on May 11, 1975 and arrived back at 9th Avenue six minutes later. The consist was (w) 8525-24, 8059-58.

The R-27/30’s which had been assigned here; 8032-3, 8046-7, 8058-9, 8146-7, 8256-7 and 8524-5 had been modified to operate only in “series”. They will now be re-modified back to normal operation. They also were the last cars to carry BMT-Type third rail shoes as the Culver Shuttle was the last line to use third rail in the elevated position.

Source: New York Division Bulletins /April and June 1975

Personal Note: I rode the Culver Line on May 10 during the daytime. As a shuttle the line had a charm all its own. There was no denying that the platforms at Fort Hamilton Parkway and 13th Avenue were in bad shape. Nevertheless I was sad to see it go.

Tuscarora Almanac – May 10, 1985 – The Book of Last Runs

Express service on the No. 7 Flushing Line will be discontinued for about four years. This is being done to allow reconstruction of the viaduct on Queens Boulevard.

Thanks for posting these photos. I last rode the SS Culver Shuttle in late 1974. By then the line was literally crumbling. The original wooden platforms were rotting and patched up in places, I'm surprised no one ever fell through to the street. The platform lights at 13 Ave were frequently out. No way the MTA was going to throw away money rehabbing a shuttle used by few riders.

I rode it around that time as well. I don't think I knew at that time that it would be closing, but I just wanted to get a ride in. back then, I knew very little of the history of the subway in general and the Culver line in particular, so I didn't get why the Culver only used one track. Glad I got to ride it, as I missed out on lower Myrtle and the Third Ave el (I wasn't railfanning by myself in 1969, and I was living out of state in early 1973).

Culver Shuttle/reconnecting Culver to 4th Avenue

The sad thing is, had that line been maintained, it could have today been a much more viable line and now possible been a full-time route for the (W) to run to Coney Island with the (F).

I've noted before I'd be looking to rebuild the line, where necessary moving it to a new right-of-way and also if necessary using two levels of single track with either island platforms or if needed two platform levels on the same side to allow for ADA requirements. This would include northbound a new upper level of Ditmas Avenue with such trains using a bridge build over the existing tracks just north of Ditmas to get to the old route (southbound, what had been the island platform at Ditmas from the old shuttle days would be such again). As said, this could be a potential new route for the (W), operating via the tunnel and 4th Avenue to 36th where it then goes with the (D) to 9th Avenue (lower level, reopened as well) and then via Culver.

I don't think it had anything to do with third rail shoes but with not being allowed to operate in full multiple power mode, only in series mode which reduced stress on the el structure.

Looking back at those 3rd rail shoe photos it appears they did also modify the shoes to handle the elevated style third rail which was closer to the running rail, but also higher, so it could run on both subway and elevated third rail.

IIRC for awhile on the Flushing Line, during the rebuild of the QB viaduct, they tried to run express on the local track on Flushing Line bound rush hr trains. This idea was dropped since it saved little if any time. Express trains often had to ride right behind the local & switching moves at Fisk interlock to move the express to the middle track at 65th Pl negated any time savings.

The way development has been going and with people paying higher and higher rents, that area is probably going to eventually be built up. Having BOTH the Park Slope and 4th Avenue lines go out to CI I think would find new ridership.

That's why I said I would move the line if necessary to a new right-of-way to rebuild it and also do it where if necessary you have two levels of single-track and if necessary trains stopping on separate levels of such.

The area is already built up (other than Washington Cemetery). It gets lower ridership because it's slower than other routes to Manhattan, but close enough to them for people to choose to avoid the Culver where possible

when i lived on twentieth avenue between sixty-forth and sixty-fifth streets i would occasionally take the f train instead of the sea beach. no real logistical rationale for it. just for a little variety. as much as i enjoyed traversing the unique sunken level four-track route of my home line, it was nice to approach the neighborhood from a three-track elevated line occasionally. especially at night.

and it's always cool to have to walk past a graveyard on your way home.
