I posted this Book of Last Runs entry a year or so ago during May, but can't remember the exact date.

South Bend's Union Station closed in May of 1971 when Amtrak came into being. They decided not to use Union Station and built a new station on the western outskirts of town, which was shared by South Shore trains. Union Station was boarded up and abandoned. it was subsequently bought and renovated, and today is a communications center. It has also served as a banquet facility. There has been talk of relocating the South Shore's South Bend terminus to Union Station, and the building's owner is on board, so to speak, with the idea.

Interesting. I had thought the idea of a smarter last couple of miles to the airport was the idea.
It would be nice to move the LSL and Capitol to the CSS&SB route to escape poor NS dispatching.
CS&SB to Kensington, former IC Lakefront to St Charles Air Line to Union Station.

Union Station was built in 1929, just before the stock market crash. It was served by the Grand Trunk Western and New York Central Railroads. The Pennsy had its own terminus in South Bend and did not use Union Station. Its construction coincided with a track elevation project through the city. At the same time, the GTW tracks were rerouted from their original alignment along Jefferson Blvd. so that they they merged with the NYC tracks east of Union Station. The GTW's depot along Western Ave. was no longer used, even though it remained standing into the 1970s (and I don't ever remember seeing it).
