Union Station was built in 1929, just before the stock market crash. It was served by the Grand Trunk Western and New York Central Railroads. The Pennsy had its own terminus in South Bend and did not use Union Station. Its construction coincided with a track elevation project through the city. At the same time, the GTW tracks were rerouted from their original alignment along Jefferson Blvd. so that they they merged with the NYC tracks east of Union Station. The GTW's depot along Western Ave. was no longer used, even though it remained standing into the 1970s (and I don't ever remember seeing it).
