LinkedI was interested in Tokyo's "through-train" set up that let commuter rail operate on Metro lines. I'd be curious to see if that was possible here. I read in some books that the Dual Contracts lines were built to railroad specs in the hopes of enticing railroad companies to operate the new subway lines. Plus I vaguely remember some idea from the early '80s (back when only the IND was running over the Manhattan Bridge) to run the LIRR from Atlantic Terminal over the BMT tracks on the Manhattan Bridge and terminate at City Hall/Chambers Street on the Nassau Street-Jamaica Line. |

The MP41 was from a time when they were looking to run on the IRT. Also, there were interurbans like the Chicago, Aurora and Elgin and Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee that ran on the L system. |

In the 1960s there was a serious proposal for the LIRR to share the south tracks across the Manhattan Bridge with the BMT, then proceed south to a new terminal at the foot of Broad St and the East River where a relocated NY Stock Exchange was to have been built. 75 foot LIRR cars would have had to been built for this service. |

The clearance envelope of the MP41 had nothing to do with the desire to run on the iRT. That size rapid transit cars was state of the art for railcars at the time including the Hudson Tubes and other cities like Chicago that had rapid transit at the time. As railcar development progressed, it was possible to make steel cars of larger dimensions so the LIRR was able to develop its various MP41 designs and the Dual contract lines were built to accommodate them. |

One of the problems with providing a shared service like Tokyo or London is the FRA won’t allow it unless the transit agencies jump through hoops to get a waiver to allow such operation. Such impediments do not exist in other countries. |

If you remember the railfan Marty Wayne on WNYC-AM, he spoke of it, and that there were 5 open slots in the Brighton line schedules at the time for LIRR trains. Suburban SOAC cars may have been in mind. |
