The clearance envelope of the MP41 had nothing to do with the desire to run on the iRT. That size rapid transit cars was state of the art for railcars at the time including the Hudson Tubes and other cities like Chicago that had rapid transit at the time. As railcar development progressed, it was possible to make steel cars of larger dimensions so the LIRR was able to develop its various MP41 designs and the Dual contract lines were built to accommodate them. |
