Re: [PHOTOS] The R-32 Farewell Run

On the R-1/9s, I think those side signs were just neglected. I don't think I ever saw a single backlit side sign on them after 1968. Now, those that were transferred over to the Three Stooges Division had their light bulbs and circuit fuses removed. In fact, the new side roller curtains that were printed didn't have circular holes cut in them the way the original IND curtains did. In order to gain access to the light bulbs, you had to crank the curtain all the way to one end or the other until the cutout holes showed up, at which point you reached in and unscrewed the light bulb. You had to take the bulbs out before pulling the sign mechanism out of the sign box.

It originally wasn’t supposed to be that way. The early plans called for the D to be 100% R-32s, and the AA/B to be 100% R-1/9. By the time Chrystie came about the AA/B and D had a mix of both types.

As Late as 1970, I recall seeing an R-9 on the 14 St Line with the side destination sign illuminated.

As I've often said, most of my subway riding in the late 60s was on Saturdays. Once in a great while I'd see a prewar AA or D train after Chrystie St., but about 98% of the time i saw R-32s.

Maybe some cars didn't get new side signs. Eddie Sarkauskas told me about the modifications that were done on those R-7/9s that were transferred.

Kev said he often saw backlit side signs when he ran the old timers on the D.

The side sign I saw definitely was a new one because it had the proper readings for the BMT Eastern which the R-1/9s didn’t have.

Maybe they spliced it onto an older blank end with the round cutouts.

The AA,B,D shared cars out of several pools.
The B and AA shared rolling stock out of Coney Island ,along with the D out of Stillwell.

The D had its own yard and maintenance shops at 205st.

New cars were purchased for the BMT lines from 1955 to 1965.
The IND received new cars 1967 ( R38)

The TA wanted to keep the ol timers off the Manhattan Bridge...so most of the R units were replaced with Brightliners...while the AA split cars with the B line.

During the midday, the B ran half it's regular service to 57th st 6th Avenue.
The R units were .basically pulled from the bridge lines in the early 70s,replaced by the basic units out of there yards..
R44s for the D,R42B..and R32.
1977,the B received R38s from the E/F LINES,THE D received 40m/42 cars,AA received cars from the B and A line.
The A received R40s etc.

All the R-7/9's that went to the BMT Eastern Division all had new side roll signs, both destination and route, and none of them carried the IND ones except for the "AA" route and 168th Street in Manhattan, but in the south terminal reading. For the front, all new route sign rolls for the "AA" and BMT Eastern Division only, none for the destination terminals.

IND "A" to "HH" only

IND "AA" and BMT Eastern Division only.

They called the QJ/J terminal by BMT syntax "168th Street Jamaica".

Different font on the new curtains, too. I have upper and lower side mechanisms with those Three Stooges Division curtains. The upper curtain is spliced to an R-1 BMT Southern Division upper curtain. And to think I paid $20.00 or $25.00 for each of those back in 1978 at Cityana Gallery!
