Weekend Rerouting M Train

Posted by jabrams on Fri Jan 14 10:00:25 2022

According to Gridlock Sam there will be no L service between Myrtle Ave. and 8th Ave. this weekend. The M will run during most of the day between Metropolitan Ave. to 2nd Ave. and 96th Street. That is one train running on 4 different subway lines (M-J-F-Q).

Interesting, not the usual Queens route.

Too bad that back in the 1960's, they did not build 57th & 6th with a Whitehall Street type of configuration so they could relay trains there.

The M sure has the capability of going to lots of places!! Remember just as COVID was hitting, they had a planned GO to run it to 145th or 168th Street on the 8th Avenue IND?

If they wanted to, they could have also put in a layup track north of the station later.

On several occasions, they have turned weekend M trains there even while F trains were running thru. They just pulled in, reversed quickly and pulled back out.

But on many occasions there was no conflict due to piggybacking of weekend GO's with the F via 53rd St. in the direction of the track used for the M relay.

According to the MTA there are no planned service changes for the L or M this weekend. I wonder where Gridlock Sam got their information?

I wish we had this M service 33 yrs ago when I started dating my Wife. Washington Heights to Middle Village back then was over an hour on a good day.

That's how A division people described the 5 line.

You're right. The M is really a line to everywhere.

It is the Daily News, you never know. It could be next weekend, what was strange was that the L was to be suspended only to 5 AM on Monday. with Monday being a Federal Holiday, you would think that they would have extended the GO to Tuesday morning.

It may be a Federal holiday, but like a few other “holidays” like Veterans’ Day, many businesses remain open and transit operates a regular daily schedule.

All thanks to the re-opening of the lesser-used Chrystie branch between Essex and Bway-Lafayette, which allows Eastern division trains to go north, where formerly they had no choice but to terminate downtown or go south, like to Brighton or West End.

That branch was OOS for years, longer than it had been in service with the KK, almost making it look like a waste, until the V was eliminated and the M took over. Out of that budget crunch and subsequent service reductions came one service improvement.

I think far more people are of for MLK day and Pres. day than for Veteren's day.

When I was in Southern California, I always like the holidays that weren't completely holidays, like MLK, President's Day (not Veterans Day, as my employer, USC, didn't observe it). Since I didn't have a car, I could go places using the weekday schedule, which in many cases was better than the Saturday schedule (we won't discuss Sunday).

Nice pic! With the people waiting on the upper-level station, this was taken before Oct 4th, 1969.

Interesting to see that apartment building was already abandoned. Looks that way anyway because windows are boarded.

That building always seems so nice and I'd look at it when waiting to connect at that station.

The upper level was so high that you could see almost the entire length of the Broadway Line and follow the progress of the trains.

Although many BMT Eastern lines went physically south, standard operating procedure labeled them as north and the track numberings bear this out. Pre Chrystie, the terminals at Canal, Chambers and Broad and Bridge/Jay Sts were all north terminals.
