Written on slide mount "July 9, 1955 Cypress Hills".
So this would make this the Cypress Hills station ? Notice the RFW is open.

The top line of the destination sign is not legible, but seems to be too many letters to say "BROAD".

It might be "BROAD". Resolution is really crappy. I downloaded the pic and tried to enlarge, no dice.

It's a sixty six year old 35mm slide, probably shot with a rangefinder camera with Kodachrome 10 (slow film).

The sign says Broad St.

The pic appears to have been taken from the east end of the Manhattan-bound platform*. That is the gate of the Maimonides Cemetery visible as the red brick conical thing on the left.

Where ever it is that pic is obviously from the early days of the R16.

No sealed beams yet.
No third rail protection board yet.
No walkway and railing on the roadbed on the motormans' side.

My guess is that the pic is taken from the Jamaica end of Cypress Hills station on the Manhattan bound platform. there appears to be the beginnings of the curve entering the station. Plus notice in the distance to the right of the Jamaica bound track those what appears to be brick buildings (with the painted ad behind the building with the pink facade. Finally notice right above the Newkirk Images Watermark, the corner of a pointed building. That could be part of the cemetery.

Thanks, when I saw Cypress Hills on the slide I wasn't sure if it was the station name or the general area.

I'll bet this area looks different today.

Since they were few and far between on the 10 and 16, What's a "10" and what's a "16" were probably more common expressions.

I never heard the numbers: 7, 10, 14, 15, 16 to describe those lines.
Even the 1964 World's fair subway map does not numbers for the those routes.

A Rockaway Parkway one went into 16 service for the rest of the rush hour, and after that to the SMEE garbage train. That was in the 1960's I don't know about 1955.

Although the BMT originated a numbering system in 1923 with the D types, the hyere not able to be used universally on all line since only the D types and later the Multis were able to display them and even on those cars it was only on the head end. After Hylan was out of office and the city offered the BMT the operation of the new lines that eventually became the IND, it was intended to continue the BMT’s numbering scheme as evidenced by a photo of an R-1 mockup displaying a number in the route sign box. When it became apparent that the city would have to operate the new lines independent of the privates the Independent (IND) subway system was established and letters instead of numbers were used as route descriptors. When new cars were ordered for the IRT post WWII the city decided to number the IRT routes rather than leave a single destination only end sign which the IRT’s World’s fair cars had. Even then, neither the BMT’s nor the IRT’s route numbers were publicly official til the Chrystie BMT/IND merger of 1967 when the BMT adopted a continuation of the IND’s lettering system for the BMT and the numbers assigned to the iRT routes were made official.

Had they decided to put R27's on the Eastern Division in 1960, that would have started the lettering of them right then and there.

I've wondered how my grandfather would have liked the R-27/30s (if he hadn't died in 1965 and lived to retire maybe in the early 70s, he would have gotten to drive them (and the R-42s also).

I wonder if he would have worked the QJ though. That was a long-ass route, all of it local (except maybe in the peak direction on Broadway). OTOH, he originally worked the Southern Division (long before I was born), so it would have been returning to his roots. Also, one of the few places he liked to eat out was Nathan's at Coney Island.

Would have been less door problems when it snowed. They should have swapped 200 R16 for 200 R27 from 1960, and concentrated the R16 on the RR.

Not too many complaints about that train.

I once spoke with a dispatcher who worked the QJ when he was a motorman.

Nothing made a day worse for a train crew than when the railroad was in the toilet and you arrived at 168/Jamaica on an R16 or R27/30 with the dispatcher announcing on the station PA "That's you to go across the platform".....and that train across the platform was an R9.

No. GE was a lot easier to hold down although some of the old time IND M/M used to say otherwise when it came to the R-1/9s. The WH R-32s had identical controllers but the spring tension was a lot easier.
