Although the BMT originated a numbering system in 1923 with the D types, the hyere not able to be used universally on all line since only the D types and later the Multis were able to display them and even on those cars it was only on the head end. After Hylan was out of office and the city offered the BMT the operation of the new lines that eventually became the IND, it was intended to continue the BMT’s numbering scheme as evidenced by a photo of an R-1 mockup displaying a number in the route sign box. When it became apparent that the city would have to operate the new lines independent of the privates the Independent (IND) subway system was established and letters instead of numbers were used as route descriptors. When new cars were ordered for the IRT post WWII the city decided to number the IRT routes rather than leave a single destination only end sign which the IRT’s World’s fair cars had. Even then, neither the BMT’s nor the IRT’s route numbers were publicly official til the Chrystie BMT/IND merger of 1967 when the BMT adopted a continuation of the IND’s lettering system for the BMT and the numbers assigned to the iRT routes were made official.
