Re: Restoring the ''Rapid'' in ''Rapid Transit''

I agree. What I was trying to say, using the example you gave, is that if the train blew through block 1 in only 7 seconds, if it weren't for what I call that penalty delay in block 2, the red would clear in only 3 seconds so there wouldn't be much of an incentive for the T/O to slow down.

Wanting some breathing room is fine, but my experiences at the RFW in the late 90s / early 00s (long before the recent upgrade work) were often that the T/O was ready to stop before a yellow-over-S as if it was a red. Lots of braking / accelerating, rather than coasting. I'm thinking that it's mostly because the signals couldn't be trusted to clear at the posted speed.

There were exceptions of course. I remember being in the 14th St tunnel at the RFW for the first time where the train was at least in the 40s (MPH) and the reds were clearing out of my sight (presumably in the T/O's window) and I remember bracing for the train to be tripped and stunned when it didn't happen!

The 14 St Line was notorious for M/M who would play chicken with the timers. There was one timer in particular approaching Jefferson St that as a rider, I never saw clear as the M/M approached it. When I eventually became a M/M the M/M breaking me in instructed me as to the exact location to cut the power and told me to just coast. I never saw that timer clear either, but because the stop arm went down slightly before the signal cleared it was of no consequence. Mant M/M used to operate by watching for the position of the stop arm rather than the signal which is why they could cut the timers so close. All prewar BMT equipment had tripcocks that could be reset from the cab because they were electric rather than purely pneumatic. The old timers would brag that they could get tripped by a timer and have the tripcock reset the train fully charged and the brakes released before the train even came to a full stop. I got a bit riskier when the R-9s went over there since if you blew a timer you had to go to the roadbed and reset manually which happened to me once.

I hated working the Canarsie Line because of those one shot timers.

I never picked 5 days on that line. 1 pick I had a job that did 3 1/2 trips on a Monday; another pick I had 4 trips on Saturday. I worked a 1 trip road special many times, as well as an occasional RDO there.

Other than Myrtle when I was a V/R M.M in 1969, the 14 St Line was one of my favorites to work because of the R-1/9s and the occasional steel.

It wasn’t too bad in the winter either depending on how much seniority you had on the V/R roster.

The speed limit has been 43 MPH there since 2019, although in January a T/O took it at 47.
