Re: Restoring the ''Rapid'' in ''Rapid Transit''

Posted by New Flyer #857 on Thu Apr 8 15:12:10 2021, in response to Re: Restoring the ''Rapid'' in ''Rapid Transit'', posted by LuchAAA on Thu Apr 8 08:47:00 2021.

Wanting some breathing room is fine, but my experiences at the RFW in the late 90s / early 00s (long before the recent upgrade work) were often that the T/O was ready to stop before a yellow-over-S as if it was a red. Lots of braking / accelerating, rather than coasting. I'm thinking that it's mostly because the signals couldn't be trusted to clear at the posted speed.

There were exceptions of course. I remember being in the 14th St tunnel at the RFW for the first time where the train was at least in the 40s (MPH) and the reds were clearing out of my sight (presumably in the T/O's window) and I remember bracing for the train to be tripped and stunned when it didn't happen!
