In the text it reads this all happened on wet trackage.But yes, there have been issues with their braking ability on dry track too. But the MTA mouthpiece did throw T/O Morrison under the bus, uh train, because there was no mention on what the black box said, which would tell the truth on how much braking distance these 2 t/o's allowed. |

My understanding is that the R179 specification was written to be functionally identical to the R160s, but using the same equipment was not mandated. It could be that Bombardier selected different braking equipment which behaves differently and/or has various defects. |

I guess the only mistake a T/O can make on a station stop is braking too late when entering a station too fast.Most lines tell T/O's of stations and situations that are likely to have an overrun. Such as on the 4 and 5 lines 59th Street southbound is considered a "fast" station. A station on a downgrade and/or express stop or just some distance between stations where a train builds speed. (I always hated Fresh Pond Road going towards Metro because of that sudden downgrade at 8 car marker). Those stations on the J line never were considered "fast" stations in the past. |

T/O would take too much brake, ease off before stopping and then get a delayed response if they pulled more brake to stop at the marker. |

You talking pre-M1 MU's on the LIRR ?They all had straight air brackes until the MP75, which an assortment of braking features, and they hated those cars. They were the first to be de-nuded into MU trailers in 1972, then to push-pull service before many of the MP72's were, which took until 1979. |

The R142s are harder to tame than the R179s. They all act the same in the rain, gotta ease in the brake rather than grab a big brake. Also I learned that the "Full Service" position on the Master Controller doesnt always mean "the most brake". |

I have seen some of the specs for various equipment provisions and I remember one involving the R-46 GOH which specifies the braking equipment to be WABCO or “equivalent.” That phrase “or equivalent” leaves a large margin for error. |
