Guess The Location...Time to get tough!

Posted by Fisk Ave Jim on Thu Mar 4 02:54:51 2021

You guys are good. To get this, you have to be very good IMO.
I say an 8 out of 10

it's tough.

3 tracks
Unique box cross trussing underneath
Runs though neighborhood diagonally

It looks so much like Roosevelt Ave in Woodside and that's where the cross streets get tough to say exactly.

This is the IRT being built for the East Tremont Avenue-West Farms station in the Bronx. The el structure is running above Boston Road over there, and that fancy girder underneath in the center is still present there.

I should have gotten this.

That structure turns right towards East 180 station.

I thought this was the 7 line but there is really one one sharp turn from Roosevelt to Queens Bvld but the structure is low there and in this photo it seems to be ascending.

Judging by protruding cross ties, which I assume will support a catwalk, it is most likely IRT, not BMT/BRT, somewhere or other.

The street on the left side is today's West Farms Road, and the cross street seen on the far right side is East Tremont Avenue. So, with the IRT up above Boston Road, it is a three-way meet there.

If today, the street names were changed to West Farms Rd. & E. Tremont Ave. then that would make you todays winnah. The un-retoutched photo pctured here shows the original names of Bx. Park Ave & Lebanon St.

No, I cannot accept the win, so I will forfeit it. The reason is that the under girder seen at the Tremont Avenue station is much larger in width, and basically almost takes over the intersection.

Looking at Google Maps in the satellite and live blocks, it is indeed Bronx Park Avenue on the left, and Lebanon Street on the right. The under girder seen on the el structure is smaller, plus the house seen at the corner there still exists, but with some modifications though.

Huh? Bronx Park Avenue and Lebanon Street were never renamed, and still have those names. So this is not Tremont.

The original Lebanon Hospital was on Westchester Ave., not too far from the location in the picture. In 1946 the hospital moved to its present location at Grand Concourse and Mt. Eden Ave. as Bronx-Lebanon.

An interesting subway postscript to the "new" hospital is that its basements directly abut the IND subway tunnel, which a couple of hundred feet north of the Central Supply unit and dispensary, goes over the Cross Bronx Expressway on a bridge with the Concourse without ever seeing daylight! I believe the 174-175 St. Station, which is enclosed within this bridge, is the "highest" underground point in the entire system!

Why do you think that? A very useful source of online topo maps has vanished, but IIRC, Grand Concourse's highest point is considerably farther north, and the subway is generally not very deep.

Based on Mr. Padron's initial response, he seemed quite sure of the street location using different names that were on the picture. Being that its not all that unusual for street names to change over the course of 100+ years & myself being a Queens boy & not all that familiar with the Bronx, I gave him the benefit of the doubt & bestowed upon him the award as today's winner.
But being the class act that he is, he returned the award when he became aware of his mistake!:)

Technically, 174-175 hangs above the Cross Bronx and a street, a good seventy feet or so over the highway. It's an elevated underground station! In other words, unlike stops north of there, which are buried in the actual bedrock (and therefore "low", not "high", this one is structurally part of a bridge.

No. The Cross Bronx Expressway tunnels under the bedrock that contains the subway. It is just more below grade level than the subway is.

OK, I figured out how to use topozone.com again.

Grand Concourse at the Cross Bronx is about 100 feet above sea level. Grand Concourse going north from Kingsbridge Road to East 196th Street is about 150 feet above sea level. So there we have an underground line about 125 feet above sea level.

Fort Washington Ave near 175th Street also appears to be about 150 feet above sea level, and the A train is also not very deep there.

In that view you are looking at the subway overhead behind that bedrock and above that granite fascia. The tunnel is exposed in clear view up on 175th archway tunnel.

Actually true! That house is still there but much changed and the other house in the background is too. The smokestack visible in the old photo is also still there.
