Railfan Windows were meditative and therapeutic

Think about it. You'd always feel better after a session of railfanning.

Well despite the fact that the widow to the T/Os cab modifies the view to some degree it’s still better than places like London which don’t even have that.

Absolutely true. Heck I commuted in Chicago in the front vestibule of the IC EMUs. The only thing better was the single sideways seat in the 6xxx CTA cars.

Totally! Some train/tram operators, especially in the Netherlands, have no problem posting all of their work from the cab view. I feel like I know my way around the Netherlands despite never having set foot there except in Schiphol airport.

I'll load one of those videos, and either sit back with a cup of coffee, or even mute the video while I'm on the phone with someone and it's totally therapeutic.

Still, I can't ignore that watching these videos does make me want to go to the place in person at some point.

At least some systems have a "railfan view"

Miami Metrorail (the Budds, I don't know if the new Hitachis have the same thing, as I have yet to ride one)

image host

That was at the south terminal, Dadeland South. The train would switch to the northbound track upon leaving.

MMTA has the same Budds, don't know if they have new ones. The Breda cars on L. A.'s Red B and Purple D lines also have them (same general internal layout as the Miami/Baltimore Budds), but the last time I was there in 1999, the RFV window was majorly tinted, and since it is all underground, hard to see anything 😕 Hopefully, they've gotten rid of that tint

With the current Covid-19 bail-out bill the FOAMERS must get their fare/fair share.
That share being, Cameras installed in all cab cars viewing what would have been a Railfans view and displayed on at least four led screens per car in the consist.
The reason being most of the contributors here are old farts that need seating and must share in piloting these trains.
Spending trillions and trillions of $$$$ necessitates this perk for rail fans.

While trains are in stations, quickie advertisements could be played to help pay for these systems.
The data could also be broadcast on WIFI so rail fans could record the view.
In keeping with half of the leftist low tolerance opposing opinions , NO anti views will be tolerated!

Agree. From November 1996- Summer 1997, I railfanned the 1 almost every day, in both directions between 242-VC and Rector. It made me temporarily forget some bad times I was dealing with- primarily how horrible my then-wife was.

The railfanning stopped when she got a job right near mine, and I had to sit with her for that whole ride!!

Post-script: I'd happily give up an RFW to sit with the present Mrs. Main.

True words spoken! Even though I operate a train for a living, it was nice standing at the RFW while someone else operated the train. While I enjoyed riding the IRT most, still give props riding the R10, 30, 32, and 38s out to the Rockaways on a nice day.

The anti-climber goes across the entire front.
Lo-V or Hedley Hi-V?
I cant't tell for sure whether the partitition design below the door is one square, like a Lo-V but it doesn't clearly seem to be broken into three rectangles as on a Hedley Hi-V.
if it were a Gibbs, anti-climber would only be under the storm door, not across the entire front.

At the time, a tie was a required part of the uniform. The required NYCTS M/Ms’ uniform was pin striped or hickory striped overalls with matching jumper (these days often referred to as a “chore coat”) and either a “high boy” railroad style matching cap or a black silk cap which many of the M/M wore, with the badge attached. I haven’t seen a true “pinstripe” pair of overalls in years, just the hickory stripe which is what most mainline RR engineers used to wear and with which most of us are probably most familiar. The pinstripe was similar to the hickory stripe but the stripes were about half the width of the hickory stripes and for some reason was the preferred uniform for the subway once the city took over although hickory stripe was permitted and was what it seemed most of the IRT M/M wore.

Actually, the Hedley Hi-Vs like the first 12 Steinway cars or “boilers” (and the deck roofers too) had only 2 panels below the window on the storm doors. It was the side doors that had the 3 panels. The Composites, Gibbs and deck roofers had 2 panels on the vestibule doors but 3 panels on the center doors. When the 150 or so of the highest numbered Gibbs cars were converted to MUDC, the end doors and vestibule doors had only a single panel since they were converted after the Lo-Vs had already been ordered.
