At the time, a tie was a required part of the uniform. The required NYCTS M/Ms’ uniform was pin striped or hickory striped overalls with matching jumper (these days often referred to as a “chore coat”) and either a “high boy” railroad style matching cap or a black silk cap which many of the M/M wore, with the badge attached. I haven’t seen a true “pinstripe” pair of overalls in years, just the hickory stripe which is what most mainline RR engineers used to wear and with which most of us are probably most familiar. The pinstripe was similar to the hickory stripe but the stripes were about half the width of the hickory stripes and for some reason was the preferred uniform for the subway once the city took over although hickory stripe was permitted and was what it seemed most of the IRT M/M wore.
