Vancouver Skytrains

Posted by geoffc on Mon Feb 22 10:24:47 2021

I was watching a video explaining how the Vancouver network evolved.

At one point they added a new line (Millenium) that parelleled a current line (Skytrain). I was unclear if they built two new tracks, so now 4, or if they just interlined trains.

I'm not sure of your question. The Millennium Line always had two termini. At one point (2002-2006) the line went from Waterfront to Commercial Broadway via New Westminster and around the hook.

But there was no one-seat ride from places like Renfrew and Rupert to go to Waterfront unless you went the "wrong" way all the way back around the hook and via New Westminster. If you were at Renfrew or Rupert you either took a short ride to Commercial Broadway and transferred upstairs for a Waterfront-bound train (which could be working either the Expo or the Millennium lines) or, much less likely, you could go the "wrong" way and enjoy a one-seat ride all the way around the hook.

Most of the ROWs have only 2 tracks. Where there is need to terminate a train with other trains going through (such as Production Way--University today) there are usually storage tracks for relays to avoid interrupting service. Offhand I can't think of any places with 4 tracks alongside each other on the SkyTrain network.

I may not be getting the question; if you could specify what exactly you mean maybe I can help further.

P.S. The YouTube channel "All Over Vancouver" has many front-view videos of the SkyTrain network, covering the entire system as it is currently. If you want to get a good sense of how the lines work presently (and enjoy excellent speed and scenery throughout), check it out.

So, the way the video draws the line, the Millenium line looks overlain on top of the original Skytrain route for quite a distance.

So did they build the Millenium line with 2 new tracks, near/on top/belw the exitsing tracks? Or do the trains from both 'lines' share the tracks. (I.e. NYC 2 vs 3 in Manhattan or NYC 1 vs 2 in Manhattan).

Shared tracks. Anywhere you look at the SkyTrain map (of any year) and you see two lines operating together between the same stations, they are sharing tracks.

I looked at the Google Earth/Google Map aerials. I think your point of interest is at Commercial Drive & Broadway streets. The station complex there shows the Expo line elevated above the street while the Millennium line is in the Burlington Northern railroad cut, below the street but higher than the BN tracks. Use street view to stand on the overpasses each side of the station complex and swing around. Also stand on the next overpass a long block west from the complex and look east from there.

I checked with a friend and they said that passengers from Waterfront have to change trains at this station to continue out the Millennium line. Each pm rush hour arrival from Waterfront results in a mad dash thru the passageway over Broadway and then way down the stairs to the Millennium line to barely catch the next train east.

On previous visits I've noticed trains laid up at a point out between Burnaby and Coquitlam municipalities. Look along Highway 1 between North Road and Brunette Ave. On the south side the tracks are just above road level. There are no trains in the present street view but I have seen them there, so this is another part of their operating scheme. The freight tracks south of Skytrain there are Canadian National, former BNSF.

To the extent there is a mad dash to make a transfer on SkyTrain, it's totally optional. With rush hour SkyTrain frequencies, every train might as well be considered barely caught!

Thank you, that was what I was unclear about. I assumed as much, but there were hints that it might be otherwise.
