CH West is the old Pennsylvania RR Chestnut Hill Branch, correct?

Yes, CHW is on the former Pennsy side. Chestnut Hill East was the Reading's line.

Interesting that they recommend CHE as an alternative, given that six weekday midday trains on the Hill East, three in each direction, have just been indefinitely cancelled for "track and catenary work".

The planned, never built connection that would have rerouted CHW to the Reading side.

That was the missing R4 in order to balance out the Reading and Pennsy side. They would have split the Main Line service with R4 (Bryn Mawr) and R5 Paoli.

This sequence of lines in the article gave me a chuckle:
“We wouldn’t do that if we didn’t have an intent on putting the [Chestnut Hill West] line back in service,” he said.

The authority encourages Chestnut Hill West riders to use the Route 23 bus or Chestnut Hill East Line as alternatives.

Route 23 is a textbook case of doing things with lines they don't have any intent of putting it back in service...

service explicitly preventing travel anywhere.
Until we see what funding the Dems can force out of the Senate,, even rider focused transit agencies are cutting service all over.

Not related to Swampoodle, but that article was written in 2012 before the "Pencoyd Viaduct" (Manayunk Bridge) was turned into a rail-never-again trail.

Interestingly, there is, in fact, an existing track connection between the SEPTA Main and the NEC, just south of the junction with the Norristown/Manayunk Line. It lacks a catenary, however, and is primarily used by work trains and hi-rails. But the relatively minor addition of a few hundred yards of catenary would complete a small part of the overall Swampooodle plan. Then SEPTA would have flexibility in routing trains to Center City from the Main and Norristown lines, should there be a problem between North Broad and Center City on the Main. Of course, outbound trains would still foul the NEC to make this connection, too.

Thanks for the link. In the 6 months I livedin Germantown (the RDG was literally at the border of my backyard) I used CHE almost daily to work in Center City. Rode CHW maybe 6 times total if I needed to get to/from 30th St.
It is too bad Philly is saddled with the rural parts of the state.

"The rural parts of the state" are pretty much paying the bills that Philly and Pittsburgh can't or won't. If it wasn't for rural PA I would be out of a job.

That would be a very rare economic situation. In most cases the major metros generate the bulk of state revenues. Years ago in NYS 43% of state revenues were from the 5 boros, but only 28% came back from Albany. I would expect similar figures in PA as in the revenues mostly are generated in metro PHL and PBGH whether sales taxes, income taxes, etc. As always, if you have contrary data to cite, I welcome it.

Thanks. Assuming Philly is the tiny blue item in the SE corner, I would suggest the ## would look very different if the salaries earned in Center City but exported to the suburbs were counted.

Hopefully Kevin will see this article and adjust his viewpoint to match the data. Both Philly and ultra-rural PA are sucking money from PGH, suburban and small-urban PA.

Wow....Allegheny County is surprising but Berks County is a positive contributor? I didn't think Berks had a financial positive in ANY way!

Businesses in rural PA generated 70 percent of my commission total in 2020. The question in my mind is will you adjust YOUR thinking Mike. All "data" in your world revolves around government which is not the entire reality of the financial picture.
