The Warriors

Posted by BusRider on Tue Jan 26 07:37:09 2021

Were the subway scenes real in this movie? As many shows and movies I have always been curious how these shots were done.

Subway scenes filmed on location but I'm surprised that the MTA gave permission to the film-makers. The graffiti covered cars of the era gave the MTA a deservedly bad image. Good movie though.

Maybe that fight scene in the bathroom was filmed on sound stage but most everything else seems real.
It also seems like a lot of that movie was shot overnight in the early am but I don’t know for sure.

The bathroom scene was the only scene for which a sound stage set was built. The wooden stall supports needed to be pre cut so they would break in the right places and sequence. Of course, when they were done it pretty much looked like most of the bathrooms in the subwayanyway.

They probably couldn't find one in good enough shape to bust up. Just about everything else was done in real locations, even if some stuff was added or tweaked. Having a station with unused platforms (Hoyt-Schermerhon) and different looks at different points was a big help.

Hoyt-Schermerhorn was disguised as 96th St. Union Square is the real deal.

None of the train markings are correct. I suspect this was done on purpose.

The express train in the opening titles is running along Fulton St.

Thanks guys! I actually thought 96th was real. I think there was topic discussion before on how scenes worked for elevated segments. The opening with the flashing lights, I thought it was the Bronx.

I have seen so many subway trains in movies with non-existent routings that I realize it's on purpose. I can't understand the reason, though.

In the Warriors, I remember and R27 or R30 signed up as an L.... I doubt they ever actually ran in service with that designation- at least not before the 1985 elimination of double letters.

It certainly did look authentic, LOL.

But I know that in real life being shoved through partitions and plate glass, like we see frequently in movies and TV, leads to very serious injury- you probably won't get right back up and keep fighting. So yeah, they faked it.

I didn't see the movie but read the book by Sol Yurick when it came out during the mid 60s. It was good, long descriptions, of course, of the gang's subway ride back to Brooklyn.

Just before the train pulls into Stillwell Ave., where those two prom couples board the train, you can see a QB local via bridge side route sign.

Except for the bathroom fight scene (interior stage) all other scenes were filmed in NYC subways as well as other locations such as Riverside Park and Coney Island.

A notable geographic error on the film shows the closed Eastern Parkway J mezzanine (look at the token booth as the Warriors jump the turnstiles to escape the Gun Hill gang in the "Bronx".)

Going through my collection I found this. Note the graffiti on the Stauch's Bath's building. (July 1977)

Honestly I thought it was all within Coney Island Beach.

Here is something interesting about the filming locations.

That’s a cool site. I haven’t seen that before.
It certainly is Ft. Tilden. The dunes were destroyed during Sandy. But as that movie ends and the folks walk along the beach you can very clearly see the end of Rockaway Point. It’s a narrow beach down there too whereas Coney Island is fairly wide.
