Re: The Tuscarora Book of Forgotten Stations No. 21 - Chestnut Street Incline

Think about it: a Jamaica-LIRR - Chambers Street route would be a lose-lose situation for both BRT and LIRR as private companies.

BRT would lose its Jamaica-bound business to a faster LIRR Atlantic Av route east of Chestnut Street.

LIRR would lose lower Manhattan-bound business west of Chestnut Street to BRT one-seat ride to Chambers Street.

There was an article about this LIRR-BRT service in a Headlights issue during the mid to late 1960s. I hopefully still have that issue in a manila folder in my filing cabinet in my storage unit.
I don't remember specific issue date and year.

My car's check engine light is on so I don't feel comfortable traveling the 12-15 miles west to where my stuff is stored, and I'm on LOA from work which is close to the storage building.

I'm sorry I cannot currently be of more help right now. If I could, I'd travel to my storage unit and dig out the Headlights folder and get the issue info. I will put it on my future to do list; hopefully you can find out the cite to the Headlights issue sooner.

Express Rider: The article that you are looking for is in the March 1966 issue of "Headlights".

The service was limited to a time when BRT trains only ran to Broadway Ferry (1898-9), so a one seat ride to Manhattan was impossible. It also predated the IRT coming to Brooklyn. Heck, it predated electrification.

The service ran until WWI between Chambers and the Rockaways.

Thank you very much for this info. Not sure but IIRC it was written by Hugh Dunne wasn't it?

It may well have been written by him. I do not have the article so I cannot say for sure.
