Tuscarora Almanac – January 13, 1981 – The Book of Wrecks

New York City Transit Authority

Year of deferred maintenance, poor management and municipal neglect finally caught up with the New York subway system today.

2,117 subway cars could not answer the call to service being laid up for repairs. That was nearly one out of three. It would take several years and a lot of hard work before the subway system would climb out of the pit.

What were the hours previously here? I guess this was when they also stopped laying up trains Midday south of Parkchester

I believe they were laying up trains south of Parkchester on the express track after 7PM. Dueto Lack of yard space. They also laid up 5 trains between Zerega Ave and Westchester Square daily.

That’s a shame. I would have thought it lasts another hour or 90 minutes.

That is correct. The last local-express left Brookyln Bridge at about 6:50 PM.

I believe that the river tunnels were signaled for traffic in both directions. They simply held the southbound at Third Avenue until the northbound cleared.

The first revenue train from QB to 21st St was an E train? That's weird since it couldn't even run on 8th Ave.

1/13/2001 was a Sunday. So no difficulty doing the crossover at West 4th. Maybe they wanted a shorter run on the first day than all the way from Jamaica to Coney Island.

Yea, an "E" train via the 63rd St tunnel? HMMMM...!

There was a General Order in effect due to ongoing track work at Queens Plaza. Queens-bound "E" trains ran northbound on Sixth Avenue and then into the 63rd Street Tunnel.

I guess initially, they kept the cars coupled as is. 7777 had been with 7768 for at least 4 years

And interestingly, a decade earlier, 7777 was paired with 7786.

I was assigned to IRT schedules at the time the changes were proposed. the original plan was to have the 6s discharge passengers at 125 St and run light to the lower level of 86 St where the would change ends and run light back to 125 St where they would go in service. I contacted Gr Cent master tower which controls 125 St and found out that the signal system allowed trains on the S/B lcl tk in 125 St to run against traffic in the tube and return to the N/B lcl tk S/O 138 St. As a result, the schedules were written so that the N/B 6 shuttles would depart 125 St 5 min after the N/B 4s to give passengers walk time.

oic, this reroute was to finish the work on the connector itself or apparently the original tunnel by pushing everything through the connector. That at least makes some sense.

1980's Late Night IRT changes

Posted by Wallyhorse on Sat Jan 16 13:54:40 2021, in response to Tuscarora Almanac for January 13, posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed Jan 13 10:56:28 2021.

For some reason, I always though the late night changes on the IRT occurred later in 1983 as opposed to 1980. Or it was done then but later changed back to the (4) running express and (6) running local in the overnights on the Lex and changed again in 1983 to the (6) cut to 125 and the (4) running as the sole local.

Also interesting that EXACTLY one year after those service changes was the infamous day the NYC subways had a third of its entire fleet out of service (though a good portion of what then was the fleet would be retired within a few years as I remember as well).
