Chicago CTA Is Running Its HOLIDAY TRAIN

Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Mon Nov 30 13:04:21 2020

Chicago CTA is running its 2020 version of its HOLIDAY TRAIN. New this years.....NO PASSENGERS. The train is scheduled to run on all eight routes. The next date is Tuesday, 12/01 on the Green line. That route covers the south and the west side. Here a video of last Saturday's video. Lover's of CTA trains screeching around curves will love this video.

With out passengers, the train makes a speedy turn-around at terminals...last in---first out. The windows are frosted, there's no photos with Santa. But Santa does his duty, riding the sled on the open flat car with its air brakes. A keen ear can hear the brakes release, LOL.

A pity the IND old timers won't be running this year. I wonder if they managed to iron out the kinks on 103 so it can run under its own power.

Last in, first out. The 2020 version of the Holiday Train wastes no time at terminals. Heard over the radio the crew proudly boasts, "Same thing as last year...We've got this." With no passengers, windows frosted, Santa on the flat car with air brakes, HT departs Cottage Grove headed to Harlem, named after Harlem, NY.
A historical fact....about the land discussion. When the 'L' was built, in 1893, there was a thoroughbred racing track named "Washington Park, 61st to 63rd, Cottage Grove to South Park. It was served by an Illinois Central siding. In 1883, the American Derby was second richest race. In 1905, the state stopped all racing. Apartments and business were soon built where the racetrack stood.

Washington Park was served by a IC siding in Chicago. I thought the siding from the IC was just at the Washington Park after it moved to Homewood.

The original Washington Park racetrack, 61st and S Cottage Grove was served by a spur along E. 61st St., on the south side of the street. When the racetrack was demolished, the spur was taken down, about 5-6 three-story apartments were built along 61st.....they are all still standing in 2020.
The Homewood, IL Washington Park racetrack eventually was served by two spurs....one from the track going to the quarry and another on the north side of the track from Harvey, IL. There are a few catenary support still standing along Center St. I vaguely remember my mother taking to the track riding those ten-car "SPECIALS." Not express, not locals, but "SPECIALS."

My first experience with horse racing was a special to Washington Park on Illinois Central's brand new High-Liners from Randolph Street for evening races. The return was a High-Liner shuttle to Harvey and a connection downtown on conventional equipment. The racetrack closed shortly after, so that may have been the only High-Liner visit to the track. Later racetrack trips were to Hawthorne and Sportsman's Park via Douglas Park "L" to Cicero Avenue and jitney-style cabs to the park.

Interesting. I knew of course about the Homewood IC spur, but not the one at 63rd and Cottage Grove. But wouldn't that be a mile long spur from the IC main line?

And don't forget the C&NW trains from Northwestern station in Chicago to Arlington Park making only one stop at Jefferson Park.

They could always do outside running in Brooklyn and Queens, say down the Culver, past Stillwell & up the West End. Throw in a next day trip from Jamaica-Archer down Jamaica Ave & Bklyn Broadway over the Manny B then up 6th Ave to 57th St and Back. Just a thought.

As much as we all love the Holiday Train , your idea is a waste of precious resources and funds. The CTA trains are more visual and run thru it’s CBD.

"...your idea is a waste of precious resources and funds."

For one day? Of all the waste that happens on MTA property thru MTA mismanagment, what the holiday train "wastes" is pocket change.

Run so foamers can get pics and videos? There is more than enough on YouTube to keep them busy.
