The last home that my grandparents owned was 1/2 block from the Newlots Av station (well 2 blocks to the entrance at Ashford & Livonia, their house was on Jerome St). My parents and I were living with them when we moved there in late 1962. My parents bought their own home in lower Crown heights in July 1964. My grandparents lived there until their respective deaths, in 1965 and 1976.

Livonia substation. That exact same sign was there back in the day (1970s). Wonder if the kids today ignore it like we did 😂

And on this date in 1969, riders on the 7 (and the rest of the city as well) went bananas as the Miracle Mets wrapped up the World Series. I remember that day as though it were yesterday.

:) I wasn't there but it was a beautiful thing!
A week or two before maybe, I was at a Fillmore East show - Kinks opened for Spirit. Randy California made a comment about how well the Mets were doing.

Steve: I was in New York City that day. I was home on leave from the Air Force and was visiting the bank where I used to work at 51st Street and Park Avenue. The division that I worked in dealt with the stock market so the news of the Mets win came over the ticker tape.

I bid farewell to my friends and was walking down Vanderbilt Avenue when the sky was filled with ticker tape and graffiti. Total strangers were shaking hands and signing. I did not know it then but the girl I was to marry three years later was also on Vanderbilt Avenue at the same time. That's a New York story for you.

Then there was that Madison Ave. bus driver who yelled, "Everybody on free!" when the Mets won it. I wonder if he still had his job the following day...

Who can forget Cleon Jones catching the final out and kneeling down, almost in reverence?

The final out

Cleon himself said he kept repeating, "Come on down, baby, come on down," as he waited for Johnson's fly ball to come down. "When I caught it, I though of all the good things that happened that year and I got down on one knee and said, 'Thank God.'"
