This and Pascack Valley service which terminates at Spring Valley are both on the chopping block.

For want of $25 million on their operating budget, but much more in avoided capital expenses. Will they hit up NS and NYS&W for more money for trackage fees to pay for maintenance if they are the only shows on the road ?

If that happens or a takeover is successful then Rockland and Orange counties should forfeit all future collections of the MTA surcharge levied on sales and utility taxes collected in these 2 counties.

They could, at that.

I'd say that the MTA has blown more than enough on ESA to build a tunnel under the Tappan Zee from Irvington to Piermont and also the former Piermont Branch to Suffern, electrified (with Metropolitan MUs), allowing for GCT to Port Jervis using dual-mode P32AC-DMs and Shoreliners. Neither Rockland nor Orange Counties have gotten their money's worth unless that happens. (Right?)

What benefit are we going to get from ESA? What's it been, the cost of an entire new subway or CR line for that pork project?

Tje only benefit is to those who were involved in the conception and construction, not the public. It already costs over three times its original price and is eleven years pady the date it was supposed to open.

I can't see Pascack Valley Line service north of the state line going anywhere, the ridership potential there once the Secaucus Loop gets built 450 years from now is too prominent to ignore. 😂 Not to mention that trains would have to deadhead from Montvale to Woodbine anyways, might as well collect some revenue while you're headed up there.

I can definitely see them abandoning the Otisville and Port Jervis stations, but the rest of the Port Jervis Line? I'm iffy about that. I think that stations at Woodbury Common and Stewart Airport could possibly breathe some new life onto that line, but not enough to keep it off of the chopping block during times like this. I also think that more off-peak express service would also help, but then again not enough to definitely "save" service along the line. If I'm going to Times Square from Cornwall, why would I choose to sit on a local train that runs every 3 hours all the way to Secaucus, transfer to a New York train, and walk a half-mile, when I can just drive to Beacon, take an hourly express train straight into Grand Central, and walk about the same distance? I could also possibly even just walk to a Coach USA bus stop and take that straight into Port Authority. Outside of Middletown and to a lesser extent Harriman, off-peak ridership on that line is pretty damn low, and it's not hard to see why.

In my Foamy Fantasy Realm, I would discontinue service along most of the Port Jervis Line, and redirect my focus towards restoring passenger service on the West Shore Line. Every station except Middletown and Campbell Hall would be abandoned. I would figure out a way to connect Campbell Hall station with Stewart Airport, as well as the West Shore Line along the Newburgh waterfront, then continue passenger service south on the West Shore Line all the way down to Hoboken or what not.

Heavy CSX traffic and capacity issues, single track through a tunnel cleared for double stacks, same reason NS will never allow any service west of Phillipsburg.

Because that's the primary freight route. It's one of the few rail routes in the tri-state area that has not been swallowed up by state or federal governments.

And never underestimate NIMBYism.

Also, no chance of any "one-seat ride to Manhattan", the (of late) big commuter rail mantra.

You mean they'll allow NJT on the Lehigh Line between Alpha and Bloomsbury, to bridge the gap on the former CNJ created by I-78 severing the ROW? I never heard that.

And NS would not necessarily be a factor "west of Phillipsburg" if the former CNJ ROW were used and the LVRR bridge were to be rebuilt. Besides, NS is not the only factor by far.

Yes, NJT has legal trackage rights on the shoe-fly track, which is just west of the LV Musconetcong Tunnel, onto the former LV as far as P-Burg, but that's all.

Pascack Valley seems like one that can be saved, considering how little is in NYS, and could be used to continue justifying the Rockland MTA tax. Also where the heck are they going to store trains for the NJ portion?

They currently store trains on the remainder of the old line to West Haverstraw, don't they?

Besides, I've been trying to find out more about the original New City terminus of the New York & New Jersey; only remember seeing it on an old map of the Erie network.
