The Next Phase Of CBTC Work On The F-Line Starts In Brooklyn

Posted by Michael549 on Fri Jul 31 21:21:13 2020

To re-cap, the MTA is installing CBTC systems and replacing the 70-year old fixed signal system on the F-line, from Church Avenue to Coney Island. This requires several weekends where the F-train ends at the Church Avenue station without a direct path from there to the Coney Island station. Brooklyn F-train riders are requested to use "round-about" methods with the D, N and Q lines and local buses to complete their trips on weekends.

This new round of work will begin August 1st, 2020 to December 21, 2020.

Some months back the MTA had talked about a direct bus replacement for the F-train in this area on McDonald Avenue (where there is not a bus route), but during the COVID-19 shut-down that bus route was never implemented, and any information related to it was removed.

Some Interesting Information & Dates:

1) The N-train will continue to run local most weekends until December 2020 on Fourth Avenue to facilitate transfers between the F-train and the N-train at the Fourth Avenue-9th Street station.

2) The full-length weekend F-train service will be restored from October 9 to 23 and on Thanksgiving weekend. The MTA mentions that any weekend where there is very bad weather the MTA will restore full-length F-train service.

3) On this forum we've talked about changes to the track switch interlocking at the Kings Highway station before. It seems that from August 31 to September 25, F trains will run express between Avenue X and Church Av for in-service work, with trains normally terminating at Kings Highway terminating at Church Av and 18 Av.

4) The work will start on Friday nights about 10pm, with the above mentioned stations closed until 5am, Monday morning.

5) Additional work on the F-train is expected to continue into 2021 an 2022.

Mike

And as I've mentioned in the past about this, we all know the drill. When the Q isn't running on weekends we go to the F instead of taking those damn buses. When the F isn't running people will take the D,N or Q depending on where they live. The lines are close enough together that you don't need the bus.

If I lived on Ocean Parkway say, I'd walk to the Q. It isn't that far. If I need a ride I'll get a ride. If I lived on the other side of McDonald the D or N are pretty close too. Most people here don't give it a thought. And you know what else? The F goes through some of the lowest density in Brooklyn. It is the part north of Church that gets busy, that's why the F express never made sense. Why have the trains bypass the busiest stations?

You would be surprised at how many people wait for the buses.

Yes I agree, they are not needed as you outlined . Always thought they were a complete waste is money . I live a few blocks from the f and n these days . I see the bustitution game all the time .

My cousin loves the overtime pay for the extra bus runs

The old days made sense due to the Common sense approach.
Three services served the South Brooklyn route during peak hours.

1) F Coney Island
2) F Kings Highway
3) GG Church Avenue.

The full F line bypassed stations between Kings Hwy and Bergen St,stopping at 18th, Church and 7th Avenue.

CBTC on the Culver makes little sense.
It would be better utilized on a lines like the Brighton or 4th Avenue for the immediate future.
However, perhaps Rolling stock Could be the culprit for the choice.

Queens Blvd is going full CBTC soon, with All R160s running out of Jamaica Shops/Yards.

The F short turn made all stops in Brooklyn after the GG proved insufficient to handle the ridership alone.

The System Worked.

The problem began with selfish ass people being too damn lazy to read What F train they were taking during the peak hour.

If You boarded an Express train that skipped YOUR stop, then it's YOUR FAULT FOR NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU WERE DOING.

The MTA removed the peak system between Church and Jay Because of these dumb asses.
The Excuse they used was "service cuts due to low ridership".

Hmm.
Even when they did some so called rebuilding work during the 80s,they took away the remaining Express service.
And just recently returned it after YEARS OF LOBBYING.

Common sense has been legislated out of existence. What people don't realize is that it actually works!

If CBTC is on the RR N end of the F, installing it on the S end makes sense as CBTC equipped cars will be neeeded for all trains, no?

It wasn’t that the GG couldn’t handle service at the lcl stations. The problem was that unlike pre BMT days when Qns lcl passengers would simply have an across the platform change from the GG to the E or F to reach Manhattan, passengers in Bkln needing Manhattan didn't have an across the platform connection at Bergen but had to go downstairs to get an F to Manhattan. To compensate for that, K/Hy Fs made all lcl stops N/O Church to give the lcl passengers direct access.

There are extra B68 trips running. They are not advertised, but they are running whenever the Culver Line is closed.
