Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed Jul 8 08:19:08 2020 Tuscarora Almanac – July 8, 1931 – The Book of First Runs Brooklyn, New York Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company The new cars for the INDependent Subway begin passenger service on the No. 4 Sea Beach Line of the BMT. The consist of the first train was 214-211-208-207-384-387-385-381 (All R-1’s). Testing continued until November 27 when the cars were returned to the IND via carfloat. Transport of New Jersey sells them two of the Newark City Subway PCC’s, nos. 3 and 27 as replacements. Thank you for the info., dates & car #'s, of IND cars tested on the Sea Beach - again, it's nice to have this info. in one place.There must have been articles (and hopefully photos), in the NY Times, Daily News about "the city cars" as they were called, in trial service on the B.M.T. Must have been nice to railfan the new R1s back then if they operated on the express stretches between Pacific & 36th St., and between Times Sq. & 14th St. & between 14th St. & Canal in Manhattan. |
