Between Hylan and LaGuardia the mayors were not so anti-private and anti-rail.

Thank you all. Would this be correct?

For BMT:

2 4th Ave = R/RR
6 5th Ave (Eliminated/Taken Down)
3 West End = T/TT now the D
4 Sea Beach = N
5 Culver = now apart of the F and SS for Culver Shuttle
7 Franklin Shuttle = S/SS

8 Astoria = now apart of the N
9 Flushing = moved to IRT as #7

10 Myrtle-Chambers = M
11 Myrtle (Eliminated/Taken Down)
12 Lexington Ave (Eliminated/Taken Down)
13 Fulton = now apart of the A/C
14 Bway/Bklyn / 15 Jamaica = Combined into the J/Z
16 Canarsie = L/LL

I wouldn’t describe the #9 as moved to the IRT as the #7 but rather just eliminated entirely.

13 Fulton was mostly (Eliminated/Taken Down). Only the relatively short stretch between 80th Street and Lefferts Blvd is served by the A but not the C.

For a few years the C (then called the CC) did serve part of that structure enroute to Rock Pk.

Inbound, where did CC passengers tend to get off to catch the A ? At Broad Channel, Rockaway Blvd, or Euclid ?

Depended on the weather. In the summer most likely Rockaway Blvd in colder weather either Grant or Euclid.

Alot of people got off at Broad Channel, despite an announcement or two as to being held for the A crossing ahead of us. 20 minute wait instead of getting the Lefferts inbound

Depending on the time of day they had to get off at Broad Channel since in non rush hours, that was the terminal for the Rock Pk service.

Between 80th and Rockaway Blvd, the C Did operate for a number of years.
Until the line was "consolidated" into what we have today, it went to SEVERAL DIFFERENT TERMINAL depending on the time of day.
Confusing..
Today's C line is basically the Local A,allowing the Main line to skip stations.
Won't SAVE you anytime, but it sure looks like it does.

If the single/double letter train ID system had been retained, todays C would be an extended version of the original AA.

That makes me wonder, did MTA get rid of the double letters in anticipation of future (and GOH) equipment that would only be able to display a single letter or number (R-32 and R-38 post-GOH) and R-142 and later? I don't remember exactly when the switch to single only was made (it was after I left NY), but I think it was some years before GOH and well before the R-142/R-142As came on the scene. OTOH, the R-62/62As did have provisions for double digit route numbers on their rollsigns, hmmm

The switch to single letters took place in 1987, but I see double letters are making a modest comeback: (SF, SR).

Thanks. So in 1987, the R-32 and R-38 GOH programs were either just around the corner, or even already underway And the NTTs just took advantage of the fact that all routes were single characters (not sure what they would have done for the "cyclops" sign if there were still 2-character route designations).

So if SF is for the Franklin, and SR is for the Rockaway (still think it should be the H!), what is the internal designation for the 42nd St Shuttle?

SF and SR show up right away on mta.info, as I type this, and presumably most of the time. They are in the icons used for service status.

I too think it strange that they prefer to put SF and SR on the website for the public to see, but still dont' want to use H. These shuttle lines are far enough away from each other that confusion should be rare but why take even a minimal risk? (The A when running local connects with all three S shuttles in the city).

In London, a one-stop line has a regular line name, the "Waterloo & City Line" referring to its two endpoints.

Single letters began to be deployed in 1972. The KK became the K, and the QJ became the J by painting over the second letter on R9 subway car roll signs.

J Line - Letter "Q" Blacked Out

K Line - Second Letter "K" Blacked Out

Complete elimination of double letters by 1986 Example: AA become K

When did they start adding the “F" and “R” to the Fkln and Fock shuttles? That didn’t used to be done when I was working there. For the public all shuttle simply were called “S” with no suffixes whatsoever.
