That makes me wonder, did MTA get rid of the double letters in anticipation of future (and GOH) equipment that would only be able to display a single letter or number (R-32 and R-38 post-GOH) and R-142 and later? I don't remember exactly when the switch to single only was made (it was after I left NY), but I think it was some years before GOH and well before the R-142/R-142As came on the scene. OTOH, the R-62/62As did have provisions for double digit route numbers on their rollsigns, hmmm |
