Although the Green Hornet and the Zephyr were actually equipped for OPTO and there is a photo of the Hornet with its rear view mirrors extended, the production Multis only had provision for the rear view mirrors but never had them installed and didn’t have OPTO capable door controls installed either. The mechanical signs changeable from one operating position for the train were used however. |

I remember reading about the six track plan - maybe in old NYT articles. If built as planned, wouldn't that have aided removal of riders to the SAS, ending the overcrowding on the Lex? |

The R-9 class of cars had just one motorized truck per car. That truck had two 190 HP motors so with the newer, lighter cars having 400 HP, any perception of speed Wes just that. |

I was on a R1-9 E train going to the old Madison Sq Garden on 50th & 8 from Queens & that train did fly thru the 53d St Tunnel. We hit a stretch of poor quality track & the whole front end of my car was swaying left & right so hard it felt like it was banging the sides of the tunnel. My first thought was this could be a re-enactment of the opening scene from the "Fugitive" TV series! |

What's interesting is that I can't remember any E or F trains derailing on that section of track in those days. However an R46 F train derailed a few years ago after a recently replaced section of rail broke under it. |

This would be the same photo that also appears in Subway Cars of the BMT & Sansone's book?Have all existing pictures of the Green Hornet been published? I can think of photos in both of the above books, which are all that I have ever seen. One of them IIRC(?) appeared in Brian Cudahy's Underneath the Sidewalks... book. Any others out there I wonder? Maybe some other railfan's which have never been published, or builders photos? Though maybe any of these latter ones may already have been published in the above books. |
