R-179 Status

Posted by Train Dude on Tue Jun 16 08:29:46 2020

Its often said that a camel is a racehorse that was designed by a panel of experts. In that spirit, I read a press release that states that the R-179s will remain out of service until further notice. A panel of experts will be formed to evaluate the car's safety and rail worthiness. There is believed to be little truth in the rumor that the MTA has requested that Greta Thunberg be part of that panel.

Does BBD pay any penalties for this in cold cash ?
The last thing we need are 18 more of them.

As a complete outsider, let me give you a historic answer. Contracts such as ones for subway cars usually have performance milestone requirements. There will likely be penalties imposed BUT and this is a very big BUT:

NYCT & The MTA parent org. never buy "off the shelf" Requirements for rail cars they buy are determined by NYCT engineering with concurrence of a consultant firm. Therefore, questions of design vs manufacturing quality become an issue. In addition, since Bombardier builds the cars in state, there is only so far the governor will allow the MTA to go if the result will be a loss in jobs. History repeats itself once again.

Bombardier agreed to add 18 cars to the order for failing to meet delivery goals in lieu of a cash penalty, specifically for the door failures.

Bombardier will make up its lapses to the MTA by delivering 18 additional R179 cars at no cost to the MTA. Those 18 cars are worth around $36 million, which Byford said offsets the MTA’s expense keeping the ancient R32s in good repair.

Didn't say that.
18 cars were penalties to the contract as a condition for the contract being late.
Penalties.

Not new.

Since NYCT has the largest fleet in the US, do they not buy "off the shelf" because they set the standard for subway car components (because of NYCT's size) and they feel "off the shelf" doesn't meet those specs?

I'm not criticizing the practice but it opens the door for shared liability when a situation like this occurs.

The joke a boss of mine said around 1990 is that there was an uptick in Yugo sales because they were cheaper than coffins.

Still not running full rush hour service. F train for example is only 8 minute headway during rush so they don't need the R32's yet.
Come phase 2 when office workers return it may be a different story.

There is some debate, since it is not yet finalized whether we will make the numbers. Still waiting on whether or not their is a spike from phase one and from the week of protests...Real indicators will be more accurate over the weekend and early next week. Even the Mayor was hesitant to confirm Monday. Might be worth a Weds/Thurs target...

It remains to be seen if working from home will continue to be a thing, and to what extent, after offices can reopen. If it remains popular that will obviously have an effect on rush hour subway ridership and might lessen the need for the R32's.

The F won't be able to run regular headways due to the work at Kings Hwy. till September. Trains cannot turn there. The best they can do is a 6 minute rush hour headway from Stillwell.

Yugo Next @ GCT (was Re: R-179 Status)

It reminds me of a joke that in a car raffle, the first prize was a Yugo and the second prize was two of them.

Anyone remember in the 90s, the School of Visual Arts held an exhibit in GCT, entitled "Yugo Next". Students repurposed the cars, for their next life. Highlights included a Zippo lighter, one turned into a coin-op kiddie ride, (actually worked), and an enclosed foosball table. The reason I bring this up, is one was converted into an R62 look-a-like in 6 train service. Went by after work one day, near the end, and still regret not getting back to take pictures.
