PHOTOS: New Acela

Posted by kp5308 on Sat May 30 08:18:25 2020

Yesterday I took my lunch break at Leaman Place PA along Amtrak's Harrisburg Line to take a shot at catching the first run of the new Alstom train up here in Lancaster County. At around 1PM the brand new Avelia Liberty trainset passed westbound at about 20MPH. I didn't see any numbers on any of the equipment, I didn't count cars and I CERTAINLY didn't like that goofy-ass sounding horn! Personally I think this is a really odd looking train. Anyway thanks to WooWooDave for filling me in on this move:

Does anyone know if only one pantograph can power both locomotives?

First class is marked by a red entry door:

Articulated truck detail:

Short cars rule:

Only one first class car in the consist:

The train will stop at CONESTOGA, cross over & return to Philly. Reportedly it goes to DC Sunday:

Surprisingly there were only about 10 people besides myself to photograph the move. Two of them were Strasburg employees:

Speaking of Strasburg they will not be opening the passenger operation till July at the earliest. The staff can work on their grounds, structures and equipment plus do contract work only.

Repeating a lot of mistakes with the first "Acela". And the name "Acela" still hasn't worn well.

BTW, "Avelia" is the name of a single-celled organism.

the people who are running AMTRAK are, in my view, trying to catch up to the Japanese, the French and Chinese with this imitation high-speed train set, but it will never compete with those truly high speed rail lines unless a dedicated right-of-way is built with no grade crossings, no connections to other rail services - freight or commuter lines - and no interference from narrow visioned politicians. The chances of that being built are very remote.

I believe the infrastructure, particularly the tunnels on the entire NEC need to be immediately addressed. When they fail these new trains won't matter. Reliable service on a solid foundation is what we need to shoot for, not 200-plus speed. We as a nation do not have the dedication to a project of the magnitude you speak of to see it through to a full build out. But what do I know...

We as a nation

It's not supposed to be up to us "as a nation" (collectivism). If this were the private sector, things like this would be addressed; as things are, this is a tinker-toy for the elite of elites.

cool they better have some serious safeguards then in case two pantographs are up, cause it will cause a dead short at and of phase breaks or phase gaps on NEC.

Given that the TGV is probably the best HST out there, makes me think they do. The ICE has had plenty of issues (I'd expect DB and Siemens to avoid something as basic as a wheel not coming apart...), the Chinese stuff is just copies, Snowmobile Inc's Acela was a technical failure.

The Shinkansen is interesting, but doesn't apply outside of Japanese operating and construction practices (the idea of a Shinkansen style operation in the US is laughable. We can't even get to SBB's level of reliabilty).

The X2000 was close, but no cigar, (which counted in the Clinton years)

And ABB's out of the biz...

There's aspects about the TGV I didn't like last time I was in France ( the bilevel ones suck, in particular), but the system in general works, and swapping between LGVs and the conventional system works well, even if they're dogs on 1.5kv.

Sure Alst(h)om is basically a workfare program for France. Canada has Bombardier, the US has Lockheed. I'm sure Germany and Italy have their own too. (Italy - Fiat, duh. I can't think of one for Germany, Siemens sure as hell ain't it.)

Too tall above rail to be a Talgo. More like a modified TGV, but without the capability of boarding and disembarking at low platforms.

Given that the TGV is probably the best HST out there

By what measure?

France has a way higher tolerance for more frequent maintenance, given their long-standing socialistic bent. That's what I meant by throwing money down certain holes.

The ICE has had plenty of issues (I'd expect DB and Siemens to avoid something as basic as a wheel not coming apart…)

If you're talking about Eschede, that wasn't merely "a wheel…coming apart". Why should a piece of a tire coming off a wheel have thrown a switch halfway? And how many similar accidents have happened? Did anything like this happen with ICE 3 or any later models?

Besides, we're getting into apples/oranges comparisons and red herrings. There isn't anything to compare to with respect to private-sector operations, and the USA isn't going back to private-sector passenger rail the way things keep getting re-regulated.
