In 1975, I don't believe the center Astoria track was signaled.

This was due to construction of the Harbor Freeway, which would step on the private right-of-way used by LARy/LATL. It was located near Grand Av between Jefferson Blvd and Santa Barbara Av (now Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd). I think also, LATL Division 3 in Cypress Park because bus-only at this time, it remains in service today.

IIRC, 8507's mate 8506 is now in the museum fleet

It wasn’t. At some point N/O Beebe Av interlocking and S/O Astoria Blvd there were signs indicating “End of signal control.” S/B lvg Ditmars, the Tw/M had to give a call on signal to all trains lined up for the middle tk although the actual display was 3 yellows instead of the usual double red over yellow. For yard moves or other moves into non revenue trackage, 3 yellows requires the same restriction as the double red over yellow except that the T/O doesn’t have to stop and activate the manual stop arm release button.

Since it was going to be scrapped anyhow and LIRR cars were also being scrapped nearby, it made sense since it was the closest yard to the accident.

Was the middle track on the Astoria line signaled at that time?

I had no idea about that New York Central crash near 147th. 1967 must have been close to the end of heavy freight traffic on that line.

If it had to be trucked anyway why not just take it direct to CI yard? BTW I think that 8507 fell off the structure can anyone confirm that?
