The Phase I's were ok braking wise but the Phase II's were bad.

All the Phase II's were retired first which had NY Air Brakes.

One reason might have been that the NYAB brake valve used micro switches in the electric self lapper while the WABCO brake valve retained the older pendulum electric self lapper. The latter, by din of its heavier moving parts, provided a smoother action.

Interesting. In the steels did that one motor per truck power both axles or just one axle? Thanks for the info.

Here's another shot of fresh off the barge R-32s in the LIRR Sunnyside freight Yd. Looking their shiny best as a set of Flushing line R-36WFs try to steal the scene

The first place the R-27/30s were used was the Brighton Lcl (QB/QT), 4 Av Lcl (RR) and a few on the Sea Beach (N). As the R-32s arrived, they went to the West End Sea Beach and Brighton Exp freeing up the R-27/30s for exclusive use on the Brighton and 4 Av lcls where they remained for a good portion of their service life. Post Chrystie caused a bit of equipment shifting but the 4 Av and Brighton Lines along with the Eastern Div lines that ran down the Brighton remained their home for quite a bit of time.

That explains why the 62s and 68s with the NYAB brake valves had them replaced by WABCO ME43s removed from the decommissioned cabs on those cars so equipped when the cars were unitized. However, many of the M&K GOHed R-26s and 28s had NYAB Newtran brake valves and ran with them until the cars were scrapped.

I remember before the R32's arrived, on weekends all Standards and D-Types were laid up with R27/30's handling all Southern Division service.

Once the R32's came in, until Nov 1967, there were always a few R27/30's on the T, TT, N, and maybe the Q during rush hours. Seems there were not enough R32 to go around..

Hypothetical: If that 1 motor truck lost a contact shoe (rare, but it happens) would that motor truck lose power or would the other truck's contact shoe be able to supply power the motorized truck?

When the LIRR rebuilt 10 of the MP-70 double-deckers in 1969, which had a motor and trailer truck, they decided to put one powered axle in each truck for whatever reason. I read that in a feature article in the defunct "Metrolines" magazine, which I still have.

Yes but there was another issue on the R-68As braking that still persist today. The brake valve piping on the R68As is of a smaller diameter than their French sister cars. Thus making the brake application slower to recover when you ease off a bit too much, approaching the 10 car mark and then have to grab for more brake. I never heard that the same issue existed on the Kawasaki R-62s however.

All four contact shoes feed a common buss. The motors are not fed directly from track power. They are either hooked in series or in parallel depending on where the master controller handle is set.

You only had four weekend routes (N, QB, RR and T on Saturdays and the TT shuttle late nights and Sundays), so you figure the R-27/30s could easily handle them.
