For some reason I thought skip-stop ended years ago.

I do not know why the order was issued.Here is the current skip-stop pattern that will go away.
MFSE schedule
All trains will now be all stops,no more A-B service.

It looks like there's only 3 "pairs" of skip-stops, one on the west end of the line and two on the east end (so the most a typical commuter would reasonably skip is 2 stops). I'm guessing it was only kept around for operational purposes (maybe it saved one train/crew over the rush hours?).

Actually, it's three pairs going to Frankford - Berks (A), York-Dauphin (B), Huntingdon (A), Somerset (B), Tioga (A) and Church (B). But, as you write, even skipping three stops is not saving much time. As recently as 1983 there were still two pairs in West Philadelphia and four on the way to Frankford.

I think they dropped the second pair in West Philly, which included 40th St as an A stop, sometime in the late 90's. It was all a result of the neighborhoods becoming better.

Same thing Frankford-bound when 2nd and Spring Garden became all-stop stations.

Probably more like increased ridership where one has to take a train to a stop where no trains are skipped and then switch to a train that makes the stop the first train skips.

Not surprising, much of the area along the northern portion of the line is being built up in ways not seen in years and the skip-stop service at this point is likely more of a detriment than a help.

Actually, the (A) stop was 34th and the (B) stop was 46th (40th was never a skip-stop). That was dropped a lot earlier than the mid-'90s likely at the insistence of Penn and Drexel, as 34th is a major stop on that line now in ways it wasn't as late as the mid-'80s.

The northeast part has had three pairs of skip-stops. Those areas are now in the process of being built up for the first time in many years and I suspect there was pressure to remove the skip-stops altogether.

As those areas were among the first to get built up.

Now, the rest of the area surrounding the MFL, long since neglected is starting to get built up in ways not seen in years.

Successful skip-stop operation depends on frequent service. If "A" is here, can "B" be far behind, and, conversely, if "B" is here, can "A" be far behind. In Chicago on Ravenswood in the shoulder period of rush hour, six-car 4000s ran at seven-minute intervals in skip-stops, followed by two-car 6000s at five-minute intervals as all-stops. It was annoying to wait a quarter-hour for a "B" train.

skip stop works if and only if headways are short. CTA scrapped skip stop not because it wasn't serving riders, but they were in a budget squeeze, so all stop was implemented so that elongated headways were less painful.

At least once a year from 1944 to 1954 treated me to a day in Philly, so I recall when the city was crowded with industry and jobs. Your news that MFSE stations are experiencing greater patronage is welcome. In the 1970's I did not imagine a comeback in Brooklyn, Philly, or Jersey City. I suspect there are still abandoned factories around Wyoming Avenue.
