Significantly larger and heavier. Rohr built bart cars did not have the part.

Overall dimension 52 23/32” W X 9 9/32” H X 5 11/16” D.

Sign roll in box before replacing with flip dot signs were truncated and had no strip maps and only had destinations for the stations that were in operation at the time of its decommissioning.

Roll in the box

Red line: Shady Grove, Grosvenor, Van Ness - UDC, Silver Spring, Wheaton.
Blue line: Huntinton, National Airport, Addison Road.
Orange line: Vienna, Balston, New Carrollton.
Green line: U Street, Annacostia.
Yellow line Mount Vernon - UDC, Gallery Place, National Airport.

The vertical lines and dot on the right between the strip map and station name are used to identify and correctly position station name in the sign box. The longer lines identify the station, the shorter line identifies approaching correct position, the dot correct position. Roll width 37".

Roll is not the one in the box.

When delivered from Rohr the sign rolls had all the terminal and short turn terminal stations, station name on line color field, with interior strip maps for the unbuilt system. They also had the temporary terminals to accommodate the building out of the syatem, some had interior strip maps and some did not. They also had selected stations that were not typicality used as terminals. Some were station names on line color field, most were white on black field, all displayed station name in place of the interior strip map. They even had a white on black field Dulles Airport. Early truncated versions had interior strip maps, later versions like the one in the box eliminated the interior strip map.

For some reason the suits never setup a mechanism to transfer this type of surplus property to that department so it could be advertised for sale. I asked the person in charge of selling surplus property back in the 1990s about the roll sign boxes, He said he knew nothing about them so what was not grabbed by employees likely went to the scrapper. This one was grabbed by employee.

Did the youtube video play? I can't seem to find the settings to make the video visible to the public without being logged in to youtube.

Here’s another oddity about WMATA as I was told by one of their schedule makers or “compilers” as they are called. Unlike NYCTA where the schedule staff sends out traffic checkers to count passengers at key locations so that the schedule managers can generate timetable with appropriate service levels the Metro board determined the headways and the compilers just put the demands on paper. In NY when the midday headway needs to be decreased for the rush hour the headways are decreased gradually tp provide a smooth transition into and out of the peak periods. from what I was told at WMATA the suits decide that the headway should go immediately to the rush hour level in one shot so for example if the midday headway is 10 min and the rush hour headway is 5 min the headway jumps right from 10 to 5 at the designated time with no graduation. The compliers have no say whatsoever in how the schedules are generated.

They have somewhat compensated for that by making that headway change outside of the windows of peak fares.

Little rust on bottom of the front. Not exactly the cleanest thing in the world. The drive motors are brushed 115 volt DC. Powered the take up spool with a 12 volt jumper pack. Not enough power to overcome the reduction gears on the other motor. Rewired it to turn both motors, had to apply a little braking to the supply spool so it wouldn't play out faster then the take up spool. I recall the signs rolling a little more the twice as fast as the low voltage DC in the cars was 32.

As a former schedule maker, it doesn’t seem to me to be good scheduling to just jump up and down between off peak and peak headways in one shot without gradually building up and winding down between the appropriate service levels.

The drive motors are nothing more then 4 wires connect to a terminal block in the end of the box with the motors in it.

I only know how to do it on the desktop... basically:
1. Log into youtube channel
2. Click the video on your "videos" tab
3. Click "edit"
4. On the right side, there should be a drop down titled "Visibility", change "Private" to "Public" or "Unlisted".
