Here’s another oddity about WMATA as I was told by one of their schedule makers or “compilers” as they are called. Unlike NYCTA where the schedule staff sends out traffic checkers to count passengers at key locations so that the schedule managers can generate timetable with appropriate service levels the Metro board determined the headways and the compilers just put the demands on paper. In NY when the midday headway needs to be decreased for the rush hour the headways are decreased gradually tp provide a smooth transition into and out of the peak periods. from what I was told at WMATA the suits decide that the headway should go immediately to the rush hour level in one shot so for example if the midday headway is 10 min and the rush hour headway is 5 min the headway jumps right from 10 to 5 at the designated time with no graduation. The compliers have no say whatsoever in how the schedules are generated. |
