Northbound E's to 168th & Bwy! 1.13.2020

Posted by Joe on Mon Jan 13 21:03:22 2020

All because of a problem at a switch in Jackson Heights.

And other subway lines seem to have brake incidents.

    Wow, that’s unbelievable.

I think I would have just gotten onto the LIRR at Penn Station and gotten off at Jamaica, and maybe take a bus from there.

How many typical riders get on an E and expect to end up in Washington Heights?

Does this give credibility to the argument for the building of more lines in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan with a connection to Staten Island ? The money can be found, especially if they found the money to build City Field and he New Yankee Stadium. Just saying here....

Citi Field and Yankee Stadium didn't have to deal with NIMBY's.

This is absolutely crazy. While the water main situation isn't MTA's fault, in other ways, we seem to be slipping back to 2017, with BIEs in critical locations, and signal/switch malfunctions all over the place.

I never worked in transportation, but I admire the quick-thinking dispatchers who kept the 8th Avenue trains moving by sending a few E's to Washington Heights. The New York subway system often contrasts unfavorably against the one-route per track Metro systems of Paris or Mexico City. However, by luck we have several decent diversions: In the morning rush, a White Plains Road train can travel to midtown via the West Side or the Lex if one route is blocked. On the Independent, a northbound train approaching West 4th Street has four tracks to choose from, if there is a 12-9 on route ahead. The 6th or 8th (or Broadway BMT choice also) is welcome, and RATP cannot match the opportunities by sending a train off-route for a mile or two.
    ---
We did obstruct some noteworthy detours, such as Manhattan Bridge to Chambers Street, when we removed a good alternative. And somebody goofed in placing wire conduits that block some Division B cars from the Montague St. tunnel.
    ---
I have not yet read an explanation for the Jackson Heights blockage on the afternoon of January 13.

    None.

Because all they have to do is listen to the announcement at 42/8.

Excluding CBTC, which I don't know much about, the problem is Con Ed not supplying enough AC power for these new signals to operate properly. King Cuomo called out Con Ed some time ago on this issue, but nothing further has been made public.

Today there are Master Towers all over the B Division with Control Center controlling it all in the IRT. Today, thanks to towers being far away from switches we have hundreds of relay rooms. All the new signals have delayed key-by and black boxes. All this requires more power. Has Con Ed kept up? Has MTA followed up? Are all these signal & switch failures the result of low voltage?

Years ago, my mother was unaware that the E ran on the 8 Av lcl tk evenings nights and weekends and at 42 St got on an E without checking the signs expecting a AA. She fortunately found out her mistake before she went too far and was able to change for the train to get her home to Wash Hts. I felt a bit embarrassed since at the time I was already a dispatcher and felt that as the mother of an NYCTA supervisor she should have known better. Now had there been a reroute in effect sending the Es to 168 she would have had no problem.

My mother admitted she never paid attention while riding on the subway with me, since I knew my way around. Once when she was in the city by herself, she found herself thinking, is this the right train?
