I never worked in transportation, but I admire the quick-thinking dispatchers who kept the 8th Avenue trains moving by sending a few E's to Washington Heights. The New York subway system often contrasts unfavorably against the one-route per track Metro systems of Paris or Mexico City. However, by luck we have several decent diversions: In the morning rush, a White Plains Road train can travel to midtown via the West Side or the Lex if one route is blocked. On the Independent, a northbound train approaching West 4th Street has four tracks to choose from, if there is a 12-9 on route ahead. The 6th or 8th (or Broadway BMT choice also) is welcome, and RATP cannot match the opportunities by sending a train off-route for a mile or two.--- We did obstruct some noteworthy detours, such as Manhattan Bridge to Chambers Street, when we removed a good alternative. And somebody goofed in placing wire conduits that block some Division B cars from the Montague St. tunnel. --- I have not yet read an explanation for the Jackson Heights blockage on the afternoon of January 13. |
