Passed by Sutphin/Archer on Sunday night. Good lord is it in horrible condition for a now-31 year old station. Missing chunks of ceiling tile haphazardly covered over or left exposed, streams of water pouring into the tracks.

Shame that there's century-plus old stations that look better than it. Not certain if it was shoddy construction or the oft-mentioned water table in that part of Jamaica.

Probably both in addition to poor choice of construction material and finishes.

A factory fresh (almost) R-15 basking in the Corona sun back in 1950. Always liked the padded seats they came with v/s the wicker that came with other equiptment. It gave them a nice comfy ride.

Addendum to the entries of 12/10/88 and 12/10/90: I was the motorman on both of these. First one planned, second one a coincidence.

Bill: For the 12/10/88 entry which train are you referring to, the E or the J?

Thanks, Larry, RedbirdR33

Does anyone know what year the WF Lo-V's were taken off the Flushing line?

Growing up in the 1950s, I remember only the R-12-14-15 stock on that line. And because they were different from the Lo-Vs running on the other IRT lines, the Flushing line always seemed a bit classier to me.

Lo-Vs, Steinway WF, Q's & Gate cars were all gone from the Flushing Line by the end of 1950 when the R-15 delivery order was completed.
The only pre war equiptment still there was used in work service.

Yes..
I arrived on the E upstairs.
As I mentioned to you before, there was some sort of confusion at the J platform.
I believe it was You who pulled that train out back to Broad St.

The confusion was the station wasn't fully open. The midnight J t/o's had trouble entering the station. I almost had to take that same train back out for an extra trip but the scheduled t/o came in at the last moment. As I was waiting to go home on the next train out of Parsons, to 121 where my car was parked, the next t/o did not arrive so they got me for an extra trip anyway, on a Redbird. It was an extremely cold night and I was freezing. The cab heat was ineffective. I was wiped out by the time I got back after 2 AM.

Across the system, how much of an isolated, or recurring problem has lack of cab heat been for train operators?

Hopefully it's much better today with the new techs, which I did not operate but in the. 68/68A it was very weak. I'm retired almost 6 years so maybe it's better now.

Any experience or knowledge about cab heat throughout the earlier R types, from the beginning, R-1 on up?

and pre-war BMT cars - any info on cab heat in the Standards & D-types, Multis?

I'm assuming there was little or no heat in the IRT cabs - which were really not cabs, just the vestibules with the brake and controller stands covered and locked up when not in use? When the motorman's position in those cars was in use, the door was partially open (when I saw them) with that metal bar holding the door fast, so it could not open all the way - so there was no individual MUDC door cutoff cirucuits or mechanism when the specific vestibule was in active use by a motorman? So when the vestibule was an active t/o use, the operator would be exposed to any kind of inclement weather, due to the door being partially open?

The M/M only partially opened the door during warm weather for ventilation. Otherwise the door was kept closed. When the C/R opened up the rest of the train’s side doors, the M/M could activate a small lever in the back of the cab that would open the door completely. The M/M could then pull the door closed manually till it got to the point a bar could be attached to hold the door partially open. On battleship (manual door) Hi-Vs the M/M would have to activate the end door handle and open it the appropriate amount and then attach the bar.

Prewar cars had no cab heat per se but the heat in the rest of the car was so good that a separate cab heater was not needed.

I remember how cold December 1988 was. At the same time, this was the first new segment opened in my memory, and they were also just about defeating the graffiti plague, so things really seemed hopeful.

It was especially nice seeing new stations added to the Jamaica Line, which just a few years earlier seemed doomed. I was, however, surprised that the new line crossed the Van Wyck in a tunnel. I had assumed it would just have been added on right after Jamaica Ave. crossed the expressway.
