Yes, but it is one that should be treated seriously.

I like your idea to:

1) Make better use of the 63rd St Tunnel

2) Revive the Lower Montauk. Of course, doing so would involve full grade separation...

Also from the perspective of someone without the slightest bit of professional transit experience, but a lifetime of riding it and 20-odd years of using the internet...

The feeling I get from talking with people who have worked in the system, as well as what I read "between the lines" on the MTA site and what I know of the utter corruption in government capital contracting, is that the whole CBTC thing is completely unnecessary. Couldn't we all have gotten better bang for the buck with Byford's SPEED program? Eliminate unnecessary timers, properly set those that really are needed, and then just properly maintain the system- signals, rails, and structures? Wouldn't that be enough to give people a reasonably functional system?

Same here.

AFAIK they simply can’t keep using the old signals forever. They can’t avoid the reality that eventually the whole system will have to be replaced.

Will the R143s now be compatible with the Queens Blvd system? If so, that's certainly a step forward.

Speaking of the PATH tunnels, isn't there a section of tunnel that goes back to the 1870s?

They can replace a traditional signal system with new components for a new traditionally operated signal system, and get it done a lot faster, without compatibility issues, without electronics and software outmoded and unsupported every 10 years, without equipment assignment restrictions. We could have had 9 car L trains by now with minimal platform extensions without Catch Bus To Canarsie.
