That shade of green doesn't look as good as the turquise. I also can't believe that the TA considered going back to LAHT steel, considering that stainless is easier to clean, and that the R-32s were a couple of tons lighter because of its construction.

If you take a good look, it seems that the destination signs are IRT specifically the Flushing Line.

No it may not be but its better than R-16,27,30. (No offense to all those fans of those cars out there)
It's just a rendering they made a fine decision with the ultimate product.

IIRC That might have been from a time when someone at the TA was kickin around the idea of a 60 ft IRT car.

If any line could handle a 60ft IRT car,it definitely would have been the Flushing Line.
Most of the original could too,but the R62 concept called for a 65 foot car.
Not wanting to repeat the Long car problems they dealt with evaluating the R44 etc, the 62s came in as standard.

There really aren't too many bad order areas that stop them from ordering longer cars for the A division..
It's gap fillers at 14th St that are the main concern.

No. The idea of a longer IRT cars didn’t come in till after the MTA takeover and the R-44s were designed.

Sorry, but I disagree. The R-38 was probably in the design stages about 1965 or so.
The idea of a longer length car was successful starting with the R-44.
The idea of a stretch car for the "A" division had to be in the early 70's.
Here's that "A" Div stretch car in 1st Ave yard (May 1985)

The Steinway Tunnels have the jog mid-way through and the whole tunnel has unforgiving clearances. I went through there today for the first time in about a a year, and was not holding on looking out the front. I had to grab the grab-iron very fast as it was quite a jolt. So I don't know how they would manage that jerk to one side with catwalks.

I would have to agree with you Chris. I've ridden the R-10's on the A,AA,BB,C,CC,GG and H trains but never on the RR.

The only place I remember seeing them in the Southern was on the B because thay were never equipped with proper signage for those routes. I had one on one of my midday trips to 57/6 and the north signs had to be blanked because they lacked 57 St destination signs. Even the route signs were slightly incorrect since they didn’t have letters but only route descriptions which on the B read “Wash Hts 6t Ave Lcl” and 57 St trains didn't go to Wash Hts. Besides the presence of an R-10 train on the B in the first place, my north motor was 3138 the car with the vents in the side door windows.
