Connecting Dallas and Houston with high-speed rail seems more realistic than connecting Modesto and Bakersfield, California Governor Newsom's ill-conceived scheme.

Building HSR in the Central Valley was originally Brown's idea. I never agreed, but I get it. He knew that funds were limited and that costs in the Bay Area and LA were much higher than building relatively in the middle of nowhere. The risk was that they spend the money to improve rail in the two major areas and once the money is gone everyone says "ok, great. We're good now!"

I think the opposite. Making transit better in LA and SF will increase demand for a better connection. A demand that is there now, but waning.

They look cool! Hopefully Texas finds a way, but as you know they don't have any real money to provide much beyond conceptual drawings and ideas. I want to see some real progress. Like them having actual land to build a RR. Or raising capital at least. Any word on those?

ROW is being acquired. Some very preliminary engineering work on the land, e.g., utility line relocation, has begun. The entire deal hasn't been finalized yet, however.

Their latest press release states that they intend to sign a design-build contract by the end of the year with Kiewit/Mass Electric. Texas Central

It's hard to understand what's going on. They have essentially no land (they are still suing to allow eminent domain) and about 2% of the money needed to build, yet they are signing contracts to build trains and the line. If they build HSR without asking the state to pay or the state to guarantee (same thing) I'll eat my shirt.

Looks like many elevated stations especially stations I’ve been in Bangkok . Taking detailed pictures of stations in Thailand is frowned apon

Not completely sure . Was stopped taking basic pictures of myself and my wife . Labor is cheap and there iis staff all over the place . Happened both times I was in Bangkok .

You have to understand Democratic progressives leaders embrace high speed rail as a cash cow where their lawyer buddies write the environmental impact studies , fight the lawsuits (part of the money sucking plan) and they collect the bribes along the way . Building the train or making it useful to riders is not important

Same as the whole “affordable housing “ scam in nyc . Politically connected developer who has little to no experience , forced to use labor from select union locals . New units of crappy small apartments are costing the city $450,000 each in Coney Island . Full cost for nice well equipped apartments but apartments being built are substandard crap .

A very low percentage of affordable housing is built with union labor. Using facts to support opinions is an interesting concept, try it some time.

This was the same dumbass strategy used in Puerto Rico, build the easy portion first and then extend it to the useful places, because, they HAVE to fund it once the line to nowhere is built, right? Yeah guess what, wrong.

I'd rather see a more conventional line going actually into College Station (rather than way out in the middle of nowhere) and also into some of the other towns along the way. Also, the station in Houston is way outside of downtown at an abandoned mall. They're sort of doing this the old school way, using the rail line to develop the land around it, although they don't own the land that's going to be developed (or am I wrong?). But it means it will have minimal transit connections and still require a connection to get downtown.

All that being said though, I'd imagine the market between the 2 cities is large enough that Texas Central and conventional rail service could co-exist.
