Holiday Train Schedule & Routes

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sat Nov 30 16:42:12 2019

Schedule & Routes
Just a last minute reminder for those who are not aware of the schedule & routes of the Holiday Train.
Pay close attention, especially on Dec 1 & 8. Uptown run will be 8th Ave on those two dates only.

Also remember that at least tomorrow (Dec. 1) you cannot get to 2nd Ave-Houston via the downtown F (it's re-routed via 8th Ave. between W 4th and Jay St.). Either catch the Nostalgia Train uptown at Broadway - Lafayette, one stop further north, or catch it going downtown at Broadway-Lafayette and wait for it it to turn at 2nd Ave.

Yes, on Sundays, December 1 and 29, the G.O. is in effect for the Coney Island-bound "F" trains will be routed via the "A" on those dates (actually also on Saaurdays, November 30 and December 28).

Also, for the weekend of December 14-15, 207th Street-bound "A" trains will be routed via the "F" between Jay Street and West 4th Street. So, watch and experience the tight squeeze and delays of four different services ["A", "F", "M" and the Holiday Train] when they do the conga line between 2nd Avenue and West 4th Street.

No, but guess what is going to happen with the "C" route during the weekend of December 14-15, and this involves with the "A" too. From the Mta web page...

"SIGNAL IMPROVEMENTS
Dec 14 - 15, Saturday & Sunday
(C) Service between Canal St, Manhattan and Euclid Av, Brooklyn is replaced by the (A) and free shuttle buses

(C) trains run in Manhattan between 145 St and Canal St and via the (E) to/from World Trade Center, the last stop.

Shuttle buses run in Brooklyn between Jay St-MetroTech and Utica Av, making all stops.

(A) trains run local between Utica Av and Euclid Av.

Travel Alternatives:
For Chambers St and Fulton St, use the nearby World Trade Center (E) station.

For High St, take a Brooklyn-bound (A) or use the nearby York St (F) station. Transfer between trains at W 4 St.

For stations between Jay St-MetroTech and Euclid Av, take a Shuttle bus and/or the (A) local.
Transfer between trains and shuttle buses at Jay St-MetroTech and/or Utica Av.

This service change affects one or more ADA stations."

Which means that the Holiday Train, planning to end their uptown runs at 145th Street for Sunday, December 15, will either have truncate their runs instead at 125th Street, or when it gets to 145th, discharge all the passengers off the train quickly so as to run lite north of the station to make room of the "C" coming into there (that was done in 2017 with the same situation at 96th Street-2nd Avenue).

Mass confusion is up ahead soon!

There was a time when there was a moratorium on all major general orders between Thanksgiving day and New Years Day but thanks to the cesspool of incompetence that passes for TA management that’s seems to no longer be the case.

Their project is probably running on or ahead of schedule, and the HOB/33rd trains simply could not handle the load. They barely make do as it is, especially with ridiculous 35 minute intervals extending up to 8am on Saturdays and 10am on Sundays. Cheaper to extend the EXPL trains to WTC than add a supplemental HOB-33rd service, or no one at HOB would be able to board the northbound JSQ trains. The crowding at Newport(Pavonia) would also be impossible with the shopping mall adjacent.

IDK where that info came from. I am presently on the Holiday Train waiting for the 12 noon to leave. I was also on the first round trip. We went north via EIGHTH Ave. from W.4th. Southbound we went Sixth Ave. as normal. There is a work train northbound track 4 at 42/6 on the D line track. So the F/M are normal both ways.

Sorry to report 103 is absent. It made a good test run from 207YD to Euclid & back but now she has propulsion issues. Don't know if she'll run this year or not as she needs more work.

As best it can be determined, R-1 car #103 was last operated around 1980. It did not run in 1982 or 1983.

To whit, an image of R-1 #103 on what is most likely on a Transit Museum "Nostalgia Special"...

I would say that’s definitely the reason. Aside from saving the general design R-1/9s, available oddballs were also preserved like 484 with the bullseye lighting and 103 with the axiflow fans and of course 1575 with the entirely different R-10 style body.

381 was part of the group of R-1s that ran in revenue service on the Sea Beach in 1931.

401 happened to serve as a schoolcar in Jamaica Yard, posing as 491. Since it was still pretty much intact, except for a signbox and one set of doors courtesy of Seashore's 175, it was a no-brainer.

Not sure about the significance behind 1000 and 1300.

1802 was the Omega of the fleet. Another no-brainer.

Well, there were 3 basic designs of the BMT steels. 2000-2499 were the same design with s pseudo turtle back roof with individual roof vents and small roll signs. 2500-2599 had the same roof design with a slightly different style of roof vents and larger roll signs. 2600-2899 and the 4000 series trailers had a deck roof more conventional side vents and the large roll signs. What would probably have been necessary to preserve all types would have been the current 2390/1/2 unit, to show one design, a 2500 unit to show the second design and at least one 2600 A unit to show the third. If 2 X 2600 A cars had been retained, a complete 8 car train of steels could have been assembled and used in holiday and other special services.
