Clark Street

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Fri Nov 15 12:30:38 2019

As I had to go someplace a block away from the Clark Street station I had to use it for the first time yesterday. I was surprised that the only way to the station from fare control was by elevator. Although I have no problem with elevators it did feel a little uncomfortable that that was the only ingress/egress. I'm wondering how a single female feels late at night. There was a door that said "emergency exit only". I'm assuming that's a stairway, am I right?
Are there any other stations like that? Maybe Smith/9th?? I do remember back in the 60's changing from the subway to the Bronx 3rd Av El by elevator but that was only for the transfer.

Interesting. As many times as I passed that station on the 2 or 3 back in the day, I never noticed (obviously, I never boarded or alighted at that station).

From Clark Street wikipedia article:

This is one of three stations accessed by elevators only. The other two—168th Street and 181st Street—are on the Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line in Upper Manhattan.[11]

There is supposedly a locked entrance leading directly from the station to the nearby Brooklyn Bridge Park.[15] A 2008 study by Brooklyn Community Board 6 examined the possibility of creating a new entrance to the station from the park; however, it was deemed economically unfeasible.[16]

191st Street on the #1 Line is actually the deepest of all. Besides an elevator to 191st and St. Nicholas Ave., there is a three-block long underground tunnel to and from Broadway at the same level as the subway tunnel, due to sharp differences in topography in this area.

All NYCT deep stations have emergency stairs. Due to homeless individuals and baddies such as EDPs moving into these stairs and using them as their residence, , they are behind locked doors. Supervisors (Stations and TSS) have keys as does NYPD, FDNY. Normal policy for total elevator outage is for trains to skip the station. Yes- NYPD, Elevator repair personnel ,FDNY, and supervision will also respond to clear the station. Before allowing customer access, supervision or NYPD, FDNY will use the stairway to make sure it is safe .Many deep stations have an intercom near the emergency stairs to notify the S/A. The S/A will then contact supervision via the emergency phone

S/As are instructed to treat total elevator outage as a highest priority emergency and to immediately contact supervision via the emergency telephone . This is also done for customers or employees trapped in an elevator. NYPD, FDNY and elevator repair personnel also respond immediately . If requested, EMS also responds

191 on the 1 and 181 on the A also have accessible exits without the use of elevators.

It's basically a London deep tube station.

As does 190 St (A). Here are the non-elevator street entrance and passageway:

And the elevator entrance and the emergency stairs (landing 2 of 23):

The Clinton St exit at the west end of the Court St (R) platform was designed to be elevator-only, but the stairs seem to be available, though clearly not meant to be used in regular service:

I have used the 190th tunnel, but as your pic makes clear,it is not accessible though a ramp for those three stairs would be VERY easyandcheap to add. Sameeneed at the elevator entrance
