What I also remember is that the slants went to the F first too. It just seemed like all the new equipment went to the F (and probably the E but I never rode it).

What other lines got the slants of the original order? and which lines got the R40M?

That's the line where I first remember the slants as well.

Cab widow looks OK, but the storm door window also looks “SMEE."

The cab window that opens looks narrow in width. The "SMEE" doors may have come from a scrapped car or the studio may have improvised.

All 300 new slants went to the E/F.

50 R40M's went to the E/F while 50 went to the EE/GG.

A small number of R-40Ms went to the BMT Eastern in the early summer of 1969 for use on the LL/14 St Lcl to provide the riders on that line with air conditioned trains by the date promised since there were problems with the R-42s that were supposed to go there.

I remember when the slants were new. Even my sister liked them and she is not a transit buff.

I remember enjoying them on the rush hour E going home to Far Rockaway. I was happy because the full-length RFW was low enough for little me (I was about 6 or so) to see everything. I also liked the Arnines for the same reason. Of course, both car classes had their own endearing character traits (Darth Vader brakes on the Slants, oil bearings, wicker seats, howling traction motors, bare bulbs and open ceiling fans for the Arnines).

I never learned what unique mechanical arrangements gave the Slants/R-40M and R-38s that Darth Vader sound. IIRC, these were the only car classes to have that.

R-42s also had the Darth Vader brakes. All rapid transit cars that were ordered around that time that were equipped with WABCO RT-2 brakes including SEPTA’s Broad St cars had the same sound. There were no unique mechanical arrangements but it was simply the state of the art of the product that WABCO was producing at the time. Interestingly the BMT Multis which predated the SMEES also had a similar sound.

The brake magnets on the PA1-3s were classified as E2S but were essentially the same equipment. The R40S-M and R42s had the 2 part cough since they used J1 relays dropping down from higher brake cylinder pressures while the R38s had more of a single sound release using J14Ds. As a new switchman at the time I got to work Concourse track test and got to see the brake cylinder gauges in action during sequence testing. Straight air would drop from 70 before it equalized to the B.C. which is limited by its J relay types. Apparently that equalization, or B.C. air drop causes for the second puff during a release, still happens today. That RT2 system also included a blended brake canister on the brake cylinder line which would absorb air so brake cylinders would not slam on hard if operators were in full service position during dynamic brake fadeout or other lockout magnet functions.

Well, I can say from experience that the blended brake canister did not work too well especially on the R-38s. If you had the SAP down to 15 pSI or less, the train would roll and if you grabbed for the slightest bit more, the brakes would grab and nearly put you though vision glass.

The old timers were in a class by themselves. Moans, groans, grunts, snarls, hisses, throbbing air compressors and best of all, spur-cut bull and pinion gears. Literally music to my ears to top off a glorious symphony of sounds.
