I remember enjoying them on the rush hour E going home to Far Rockaway. I was happy because the full-length RFW was low enough for little me (I was about 6 or so) to see everything. I also liked the Arnines for the same reason. Of course, both car classes had their own endearing character traits (Darth Vader brakes on the Slants, oil bearings, wicker seats, howling traction motors, bare bulbs and open ceiling fans for the Arnines).

I never learned what unique mechanical arrangements gave the Slants/R-40M and R-38s that Darth Vader sound. IIRC, these were the only car classes to have that.
