Video: R-1 #103 Testing At Hoyt-Schermerhorn

Posted by JayZeeBMT on Sat Nov 9 10:37:32 2019

Testing restored R-1 #103 before the upcoming Holiday Train season.

If everything checks out OK, this will make the Holiday Train a nine-car consist.

Does the 1575 have a post war horn or an Arnine whistle ? I think I heard the former.

God bless those good folks who've restored all those old timers, including the museum BMT standards. I can't wait to see a nine-car Holiday Special. Now let's hope they can put together one good car out of 923 and 925.

And I would not be surprised if R-1 #103 will be making its first in-service passenger run on Sunday, December 1, 2019 going up the 8th Avenue Line north of West 4th Street interlocking on the uptown local track. Because the northbound 6th Avenue Line express track will be out of commission that weekend, the R-1/9 Holiday train will go up that way!

By the way, the northern terminals is set to be at 125th Street on Sundays, December 1 and 8, and at 145th Street (lower level) on Sundays, December 15, 22 and 29, 2019.

Too bad it wasn’t done before the R-10s were designed so they could have had the axiflows instead of those upside down desk fans.

According to nycsubway.org, #103's axiflow fans were installed in 1947, the same year that #1575 was introduced with its redone body design and those bracket fans. Imagine that, and that would give way to the R-15 contract that was ordered in that same year of 1947.

On a semi-related note, Pittsburgh Railway would order 100 PCC-type cars in the 1700-series with those type of large fans too, as they were built 1948-1949 from Saint Louis Company.

But by the time one is ready there may be so much CBTC out there there may be no place to run the R1/9's.

As it is we can't run it on the L line and the TOMC on the #7 line.

Yes, that's what I meant - when I was growing up in Queens during the mid 1950s, it was all R1-9's on the E, F, & in Manhattan on the D when we used it - we moved out to L.I. when I was seven.

I wasn't aware of the R-10s until I was 14 or 15 years old, when I used it to visit the son of family friends who lived in the Bronx (took the A to 207, then the #10 bus to Riverdale just above Henry Hudson Parkway where his family lived.)

There would have to be absolute blocks set up-----you designate sections of track where no train is allowed except the museum train----which would likely delay the regular trains-------which was not done on the #7 line once CBTC came into play for the TOMC to run last opening day at Citi-Field.

Or install CBTC equipment in the museum trains----a costly undertaking considering how often this equipment is operated.

You're right, I do remember the R-38s beginning service, and I might have ridden one on the F pre-Chrystie, though I don't remember this.
I just have this memory of summer 1970 (?) and seeing the Slant R-40s operating into 179th, and thinking that changes are happening now.

During the late 60s I would drive into Queens and park near 179th St. my family's former home station.
